The Polytechnic University held its eighth annual Summer School, an educational intensive for high school students that brought together talented children from all over the country. This year, 88 high school students from St. Petersburg and other regions of Russia who passed a competitive selection took part.

The Summer School program included four areas that combined theory, practice, and excursions to leading enterprises. The students visited UEC-Klimov, the Petersburg Tractor Plant, the Institute of Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, NIIEFA, the IT Contact company, and the Volkhov Hydroelectric Power Station. In the final, they defended solutions to cases provided by the organizers.

On the Wings of Polytech track, the participants worked on optimizing the wing design. They created a model in KOMPAS-3D, conducted virtual tests in ANSYS, calculated the load and lift at different angles of attack. The final stage was 3D printing of the wing and its testing on a special stand. The guys presented the results in the form of an engineering report with the defense of the project. The teachers of the program were engineers of the Higher School of Power Engineering and the Scientific and Educational Center "Aircraft Engines and Power Plants" PISh CI Nikita Izbyakov, Andrey Shirokih and Anastasia Bodunova.

Participants in the track "Energovaybe: how to tame the energy current and not burn out" successfully designed an efficient power supply system for a private home. They analyzed the needs of future residents and developed an optimal layout for electrical appliances, including sockets, switches, and lighting fixtures. To ensure reliable power supply, students calculated the parameters of the key elements of the system and prepared a detailed power distribution plan. The project took into account modern requirements for safety, energy efficiency, and ease of use.

The students studied electric power engineering with maximum focus on practical applicability. Testing the operation of electrical appliances, conducting experiments on connecting light bulbs, the first modeling in a popular engineering application, developing their own power supply scheme – the participants of the Summer School had no time to get bored, – noted Maria Lyulina, senior lecturer of the Higher School of Electric Power Systems.

In the track "Linguistics in the Digital Age: from Data Analysis to Artificial Intelligence", schoolchildren analyzed excerpts from English textbooks for grades 7–11 to assess their complexity. Using special metrics and automatic text processing tools, they found out how the "from simple to complex" principle is observed in the school curriculum. The results will help textbook authors adjust the selection of materials, and teachers will be able to adapt complex texts for better understanding. The track was organized by teachers and staff of the Higher School of Linguistics and Pedagogy Alexander Dmitriev, Marina Kogan and Elena Krupnova.

In the "How it works: mechanical engineering" program, schoolchildren successfully designed and calculated a single-stage gearbox, a key mechanism for industrial equipment. They performed energy-kinematic calculations, created a 3D model, and analyzed various production technologies, including traditional processing and 3D printing. The intensive course allowed future engineers to master modern methods of designing mechanical systems and understand the principles of choosing optimal production solutions.

The summer school is a unique opportunity for schoolchildren to immerse themselves in student life and get acquainted with their future profession. Working in groups, together with interested and motivated children, allows them to delve deeper into various technologies of modern professions, – noted the director of the Center for Work with Applicants Artem Egupov.

The best teams received additional points, which will be taken into account when entering SPbPU, as well as gifts.

The most valuable thing for me was the acquired experience of teamwork and practical skills of working in KOMPAS-3D. Summer School "Cryptography and Information Security" Started in Saint Petersburg

From July 7 to 21, the summer school "Cryptography and Information Security" is taking place at the Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. It is a traditional event organized by the Cryptographic Center (Novosibirsk) and the International Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok.

More than 200 teachers and students, postgraduates and schoolchildren from 35 cities of Russia took part in the summer school dedicated to the issues of modern cryptography and information security. Double success: the first graduates of SPbPU and Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance received diplomas

The Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade of SPbPU hosted the first graduation of bachelors of the international educational double degree program with Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance (China).

The defense of final qualification works in the direction of "Economics" (profile "Finance") was held in English on the campus of Lanzhou University of Economics and Finance in Gansu Province. Students presented the results of their research on current issues of finance, economic analysis and investment management. The examination committee from SPbPU included the director of the Higher School of Engineering and Economics of IPMEiT Dmitry Rodionov, associate professor of VIES and program director Daria Krasnova, associate professors of VIES Ekaterina Burova and Evgeny Konnikov. The Faculty of Information Technology of NSU has graduated the first master's students of two new programs

Yesterday, the first Master's students graduated from two new programs Faculty of Information Technology NSU, launched in 2023, are “Internet of Things” and “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science”. The programs are distinguished by their interdisciplinary nature and in-depth training, which allows solving a wide range of problems in in-demand IT areas.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects that can be connected using various technologies and sensors to collect and analyze data. The development of IoT opens up new opportunities for business, industry, transportation, healthcare, and many other areas. However, to realize all these opportunities and benefits, a qualified team of specialists is needed who have deep knowledge in a wide range of areas, from programming and data analytics to communications technology and security, and also understand the operation of the sensors themselves and the subject area in which they are used.

— IoT is one of the trends in the development of modern IT. When preparing to create and design solutions for the Internet of Things, a master's student must demonstrate a whole range of knowledge. Firstly, it is necessary to learn how to work in conditions of limited computing performance and electricity, since Internet of Things devices must provide a long battery life. Secondly, in order for your system to work, a computer is not enough, you must ensure the transfer of this data. Thirdly, where we deal with data, the task arises to ensure its safety and protection. I will give an example from the healthcare sector. We all know smart watches that measure the pulse, count the number of steps, etc. In order for them to perform tasks, for example, monitoring the health of the elderly, it is necessary to implement more complex Internet of Things tools. The question arises: since this is personal, medical data, it is necessary to provide for its correct protection. Thus, in order to work in the IoT field, you need to be able to solve a whole range of problems and be an expert in different sections of modern information technology. Within the framework of the new direction, we are training exactly such specialists, — the dean of the NSU FIT, Corresponding Member, spoke about the features of the program. RAS Mikhail Lavrentiev.

The new program is also distinguished by the fact that during their studies, master's students participate in the implementation of projects that are carried out on order or in cooperation with businesses working in the IoT area. Thus, the university's partner in organizing the new master's program was the company "Laboratory of the Internet of Things", which develops ground equipment for satellite systems, as well as the company YADRO.

Denis Enes, a graduate of the Master's program "Internet of Things" at the NSU Institute of Information Technologies, shares his impressions of the training:

– I graduated from the NSU FIT Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science and Systems Engineering. At the same time, a new program appeared in the FIT Master’s program – Internet of Things. I wanted to study something new, so I applied. The workload was heavy, especially in the first year, so it was difficult to combine study and work. However, it was worth the effort: as a result, I acquired knowledge that was different from what I received in my Bachelor’s degree, so now I have more opportunities for further career development.

In the second program, "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science," students received the necessary knowledge to work with artificial intelligence. They learned to develop intelligent solutions by participating in real company projects, as well as to apply AI and Data Science technologies in information and analytical activities for a wide range of areas of the digital economy.

— We have developed a program that allows our master's students to understand what artificial intelligence is, what needs to be done to make its systems work, how to construct a database, how to estimate the size of the required hardware base that will support the system. So, now AI is increasingly penetrating into people's everyday lives — these are solutions for automatic face recognition when entering an office or an entrance, recognizing car numbers to open a barrier, garage, etc. Such systems require a minimal hardware base. We are preparing students for the fact that it is necessary not only to build an artificial intelligence system, but to understand what is sufficient to solve a specific range of problems, — explained Mikhail Lavrentyev.

The new educational program is actively supported by partners, including Postgres Professional, YADRO, institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other companies.

Ilya Stetsky:

— Studying on the program was very interesting and useful. If before admission I thought that neural networks were something narrow, then during the master's program this area was presented more broadly, from different sides, I discovered different areas of AI application. In general, the training was comprehensive and deep. In the future, I plan to work in the field of real-time data stream processing.

Chinese student Aisaiti Baishan:

— I am very glad that I spent these two years in Akademgorodok! Before NSU, I studied at Chongqing University. I decided to enroll here because NSU is very famous in China, everyone knows that it has a high level of education, including in mathematics and IT, and professional teachers. I plan to return home to China and continue my postgraduate studies. I received my diploma and now I want to thank everyone for these two years at the university!

A new direction “Integration of solutions using artificial intelligence technologies” has opened at the Higher College of Informatics of NSU

The Higher College of Informatics of Novosibirsk State University has received a license and is opening a new specialty, "Integration of Solutions Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies." This is a modern secondary vocational education (SVE) program aimed at training qualified specialists in working with AI. Recruitment for the new program has already started and will amount to up to 30 people. The training is designed for a period of 3 years and 10 months in full-time form.

Graduates of the program will receive the qualification of "artificial intelligence specialist" and acquire skills in developing, integrating and implementing AI solutions in various fields: industry, medicine, education, finance and service industries. During the training, students will study the basics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data processing, as well as working with intelligent systems and robotics.

— Our new program is different in that students will work on real cases of industrial partners, train neural networks on the most productive graphics cluster beyond the Urals — this is the pilot cluster of the Lavrentyev supercomputer center, which we launched in 2024. The teachers will be research associates of the NSU Research Center for Artificial Intelligence — leading experts in AI in our country. From this point of view, our program is unique: no other educational institution of secondary vocational education in our region provides such opportunities, — says Alexey Okunev, director of the Higher College of Informatics at NSU.

Those who enroll in the new program will gain the skills of training, customizing, and implementing products based on artificial intelligence. The development of new artificial intelligence tools will be taught in this program, which distinguishes it from other programs presented at the NSU VKI.

A new direction has just appeared: the Higher College of Informatics of NSU received a license in June of this year. Recruitment is conducted on a fee-paying basis based on 9 classes, next year it is planned to receive budget places.

The NSU VKI has already noted a great deal of interest in the program, although recruitment was only recently announced. One of the reasons is the high demand on the market for specialists who can work with AI. Some IT companies, when hiring, require programming skills using AI assistants. And the new program teaches how to use artificial intelligence in professional work.

— The demand for process automation using artificial intelligence exceeds the supply of specialists on the market. In the field of AI, even graduates with the skills of a beginner programmer can find good vacancies. It is important to note that we do not need those who are doing “my first project on YOLO”. We need specialists in optimizing the performance of AI solutions, their integration with other IT products. The use of artificial intelligence on autonomous and robotic devices is also gaining popularity, — adds Alexey Okunev.

NSU VKI teachers closely follow trends in both products and market applications of artificial intelligence. Therefore, the new direction has great prospects for further development.

— Now, in addition to autonomous AI, prompt engineering is gaining popularity, that is, the creation of effective and accurate prompts (hints) for working with large language models (Large Language Model, LLM); as well as information search using Retrieval Augmented Generation (generation supplemented by search), when LLMs respond to a request based on data obtained as a result of searching in external sources. In the near future, we hope to implement these, currently advanced, developments in our courses, — adds Alexey Okunev.

In Novosibirsk, practical training in the field of research methods using synchrotron radiation sources is taking place at the SKIF Center for Collective Use

From July 1 to 11, practical training in the field of research methods using synchrotron radiation sources is taking place in Novosibirsk at the SKIF Collective Use Center. The initiator and main organizer of the event is the Siberian Ring Photon Source Collective Use Center, and the co-organizer is Novosibirsk State University. This year, the practice, which is being held for the third time, has acquired international status: almost 30 people are participating in it — students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of RUDN, master's students of Bauman Moscow State Technical University and young scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. At Novosibirsk State University, the project is being implemented with the support of the Priority 2030 program.

— The main goal of the event is to introduce the possibilities of synchrotron research methods — first of all, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy. Lectures during the practice are given by leading Novosibirsk scientists who specialize in these areas. Another task is to prepare and attract future users of the SKIF Cosmonaut Training Center, because those students who take part in the practice will know where they can go to conduct research using synchrotron radiation when they work in science or other fields, — said Kristina Schaefer, senior lecturer at the Department of Catalysis and Absorption. Faculty of Natural Sciences of NSU, one of the organizers of practical training.

On July 4, the participants of the internship spent a day at Novosibirsk State University. They were given practical classes on decoding and refining the crystal structures of low-molecular organic compounds and biopolymers, which were conducted by teachers of the Department of Solid State Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of NSU. In the following days, they will have practice on an X-ray diffractometer and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, where they will be able to apply the knowledge they have gained.

They were also given a tour of the Analytical and Technological Research Center “High Technologies and Nanostructured Materials” Physics Department of NSU. NSU ATIC conducts structural-functional and technological research in solid state physics and chemistry, studies unique nanosystems and materials. Research is carried out within the framework of such promising areas as nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, methods of nanomaterial certification, functional nanomaterials, nanostructured materials and nanopowders.

The participants of the internship were attracted by the topic and the wide range of scientific research opportunities provided by Akademgorodok and Novosibirsk.

— I am interested in the opportunity to study certain areas in greater depth, to acquire and improve skills. This internship provides such a very good opportunity. Novosibirsk and Akademgorodok have a large knowledge base, there are universities and research institutes that are deeply involved in the topics that interest me.

Maxim Fomin, first-year master's student at Bauman Moscow State Technical University:

— The program I am studying is aimed at studying the synchrotron structure, we work with its components. That is why I was interested in this internship.

Anastasia Rotkovich, Junior Researcher, State Scientific and Practical Center for Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus:

— I work on an X-ray diffractometer and, in general, use ionizing radiation, gamma radiation, for my research. The topic of practical training overlaps with what I do, so I decided to take part. NSU has a wide range of modern equipment. It would be interesting to collaborate in this regard, to build international connections for joint research.

Let's talk about Russia: Polytechnic's study guides for Mariupol students

From September 1, students of the Priazovsky State Technical University (PSTU) will begin studying the key course "Fundamentals of Russian Statehood" using the unique practical manual "Let's Talk About Russia". It was developed by employees of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

In recent years, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation has been actively working to reform the humanitarian block of disciplines in the country's universities. One of the main innovations of the 2023-2024 academic year was the introduction of a patriotic-focused academic subject, "Fundamentals of Russian Statehood". The need to develop the discipline was especially emphasized by Russian President V.V. Putin at a meeting of the State Council "On the implementation of youth policy in modern conditions". The head of state pointed out the critical importance of this step in the context of escalating information confrontation, noting the increased vulnerability of the younger generation to targeted attacks from outside. The task has been set to give young people reliable guidelines and reliable knowledge through a fundamental academic course on the "History of Russia" and "Fundamentals of Russian Statehood".

In response to the appeal of the teachers of the Priazovsky State Technical University to the Vice-Rector for Educational Activities of SPbPU Lyudmila Pankova, an additional print run of the textbook "Let's Talk About Russia" was promptly printed and sent to Mariupol. The main feature of the publication is its innovative structure, which allows for an organic combination of theoretical training in the course "Fundamentals of Russian Statehood" with various analytical, project and creative tasks.

By studying the fundamental principles of statehood, value and ideological attitudes of a citizen of the Russian Federation, students will not only learn the information, but also comprehend it through dialogues, discussions, project work and the completion of creative tasks.

For example, when studying the topic "Diversity of Russian Regions", students are offered tasks in the form of fillwords and anagrams. The game approach turns the acquisition of material into a fascinating search, developing attentiveness and analytical thinking. Working on the topic "Victories and Trials of Russia", students create a virtual art gallery of works dedicated to the trials or victories of Russia. Reflecting on the traditional values of Russian society, students analyze how values and moral ideals are reflected in language, works of art, and are fixed in the form of quotes, images, and characters. The children select quotes and suitable images from works of literature and popular culture that most vividly demonstrate the manifestation of a specific value. It is the synthesis of theory and interactive tasks that allows us to form a meaningful personal attitude to the principles and values of Russian statehood, making the learning process as productive and engaging as possible.

At the present time, the Higher School of Social Sciences of the Humanitarian Institute is completing work on a collective monograph, “Russia’s Civilization Path,” within the framework of a single educational and methodological complex on “Fundamentals of Russian Statehood.” The monograph will become an additional resource for integration processes aimed at forming the socio-cultural sovereignty of our country.

Participants of the Big Mathematical Workshop will solve problems in the fields of energy, public utilities and biomedicine

On July 7, the famous Academician A.I. Maltsev Auditorium of Novosibirsk State University hosted the 6th Big Mathematical Workshop (BMM-2025) — an event in which several hundred schoolchildren, students, and postgraduates will try to solve or make significant progress in solving an interesting research, technological, or methodological problem in the field of mathematics.

This year, the event is taking place at the sites of four leading universities in the country: NSU, ITMO University (St. Petersburg), Adyghe and Tomsk State Universities. In Novosibirsk, more than 230 people from more than 20 cities in Russia are taking part in BMM projects. The English-language section of BMM, which was launched in 2024, this time brought together more than 20 students from Chinese universities.

Addressing the participants of the Workshop with a greeting, the rector of NSU, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Fedoruk noted:

— We have many mathematical workshops, but the Big one is only one. And it is no coincidence that it starts here, in the famous Academician Maltsev Auditorium, where many outstanding scientists began their path to science. Novosibirsk University has always paid great attention to teaching mathematics in all faculties, and the idea of the Big Mathematical Workshop was conceived here and in a few years has grown from a local event into an international one. I wish all participants successful completion of their projects and further expansion of the boundaries of the workshop.

The goal of the BMM is to obtain a real result, the tasks come from customers – scientific organizations and enterprises, and it itself is a satellite event of the International Forum of Technological Development "Technoprom". This focus on practical results was emphasized by the Vice-Governor of the Novosibirsk Region Irina Manuilova, who took part in the grand opening of the workshop:

— In total, more than 30 projects have been selected for the participants, a number of which have absolutely obvious practical significance and are aimed at solving problems in the field of energy, utilities, biomedicine and other industries. The authors of the best works will then have the opportunity to present their results to potential customers at the Technoprom forum itself. The organizers of the workshop can already show examples of the implementation of the results of projects from previous years in the real sector of the economy.

Examples of projects developed during the BMM in previous years and implemented in real practice include an algorithm that allows for the automation of the creation of a cutting map and optimization of the cutting of building materials, such as plywood. This domestic software has replaced foreign software that has become unavailable since 2022. The second example is from the financial sector, a model for assessing the creditworthiness of a potential borrower based on machine learning.

The Big Mathematical Workshop program consists of two intensive weeks separated by an intermodule. The BMM will run until July 19. The Big Mathematical Workshop also includes a school section, in which 50 children will participate, they will work on 6 projects. From 2023, based on the results of participation in the BMM, you can earn additional points for admission to NSU.
