November 8th marks World Urbanism Day, also known as Urbanism Day, established in 1949 on the initiative of architect Carlos Maria della Paolera, a professor at the University of Buenos Aires. The day aims to highlight the importance of sound urban planning and the creation of comfortable and sustainable environments in megacities.

According to the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), residents of the "concrete jungle" make up at least 75% of the Russian population, highlighting the particular importance of urban management and planning for the entire country. This is why the State University of Management offers a relevant program, "Urban Studies and City Management," training professional municipal and territorial leaders. On November 7, negotiations with Ekaterina Kuzmina, Vice President of PSB Bank, took place at the State University of Management. Representing the university were Rector Vladimir Stroyev, Vice Rector Dmitry Bryukhanov, and Vice Rector Maria Karelina.

The parties discussed collaboration within the "Commonwealth" social and educational platform, created by PSB Bank jointly with Rosfinmonitoring in 2021, and the university's continued participation in the International Financial Security Olympiad. Particular attention was paid to the formats for collaboration between SUM and PSB Bank in creating educational and scientific content based on the "Commonwealth" platform. The meeting participants explored opportunities to advance SUM educational and scientific projects that have significant potential for management education and strategic areas of socioeconomic development.

Ekaterina Kuzmina, Vice President of PSB Bank, was given a tour of key university locations, including laboratories in the Information Technology Center, the SUM Pre-University, the Media Center, and the Innovative Solutions Student Design Bureau. She was particularly interested in a demonstration of the platform being developed as part of a major research project and presented at the SUM Engineering Project Management Center.

We are confident that this dialogue will mark the beginning of productive collaboration between the State University of Management and PSB Bank in the area of educational and scientific projects.

The State University of Management and the Moscow City Branch of the All-Russian Student Rescue Corps (VSKS) held a joint campaign in support of military personnel participating in missions in the special military operation zone.

Vladimir Stroyev, Rector of the State University of Management, and Vice Rectors Vitaly Lapshenkov and Pavel Pavlovsky, along with Maxim Dzhetygenov, Head of the Moscow City Branch of the VSKS, and Corps volunteers, sent humanitarian aid as part of the "GUU – SVOIM" project. The aid included camouflage nets and trench candles made by our students. This initiative has become a significant example of the university community's unity. Students, faculty, and staff at the State University of Management joined forces to provide concrete assistance to those defending the country today and to express their gratitude for their service.

"Participating in collecting humanitarian supplies for our soldiers is undoubtedly important and necessary. It is each of us's duty to help, to the best of our ability, those who defend our lives and our freedom. We send essential items to the front that are constantly needed in large quantities (household and hygiene products, food), and we also purchase items upon request from soldiers," noted Vladimir Stroyev.

As a reminder, the "GUU – SVOim" campaign began in January 2024. The previous shipment departed on September 30th. Our project is part of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation's public campaign "Universities for the Front!", created to collect humanitarian aid for service members of the SVO and civilians in neighboring regions of Russia.

Sumaira Yasmin from the State University of Management won a prize in the regional stage of the All-Russian competition for international students "StudRussia" in the "Conquerors of the Summits" category (English track) for her athletic achievements.

This category honors winners, laureates, and participants in competitions and olympiads at the university, regional, national, and international levels—all those who have made a significant contribution to the development of sports in their alma mater, city, region, and Russia.

The regional stage of the competition, organized by the University of Science and Technology (MISiS) with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, was held at the Maurice Thorez Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU). It was attended by 140 international students from 33 countries, representing 57 universities from 14 regions of the Central Federal District.

It should be noted that the main goal of the championship is to identify and reward international students with outstanding achievements in education and science, youth policy, student leadership, community service, volunteerism, creativity, and sports. The winner of the "Best International Student" Grand Prix at the final all-Russian stage will be the winner in several categories; their name will be announced on December 10.

The All-Russian Forum of Student Education Quality Committees and Student Opinion Research Centers, "Exploring Students," was held at the State University of Management. This significant event brought together approximately 100 representatives from 30 Russian universities, who came together to discuss development directions for a reliable system for researching the needs and concerns of students and their communities.

The forum's geography was quite extensive: from Kaliningrad to Chelyabinsk and from Surgut to Stavropol. This diversity of participants created a unique atmosphere for exchanging experiences and opinions, which allowed for the identification of common challenges faced by students in different regions.

At the opening ceremony, those gathered were greeted by Pavel Pavlovsky, Vice-Rector of the State University of Management, and Nikolai Zhdanov, Chairman of the All-Russian Public Youth Movement "Association of Students and Student Associations of Russia."

"I sincerely believe we need to conduct as much diverse research as possible. Today, there's a huge demand from young people for decision-making power. Only when students themselves participate in the discussion of their position in society will they lose the sense of being mere figurines and develop a sense of belonging to their homeland," Pavel Pavlovsky emphasized.

Together with experts from the Association of Trainers of the Russian Union of Youth, Forum participants worked in three workshops:

"Opinion Research," where students went from research conception to product development—a kinesthetic questionnaire and in-depth interviews. "Solution Formation," where students learned tools for problem solving, idea generation, and hypothesis testing. "Interaction with Administration," where activists attempted to view student initiatives through the eyes of management and create tools for effective interaction.

To obtain optimal feedback and improve the productivity of further work within the educational component, separate blocks were devoted to assessing the quality of the program.

At the forum's closing, participants discussed the results and held an informal ceremony to initiate participants into the All-Russian public youth movement "Association of Students and Student Associations of Russia."

Based on the results, a methodological guide for the work of education quality commissions and student opinion research centers will be published.

It should be noted that the forum is organized by the State University of Management and the Association of Students and Student Organizations of Russia. It is being held with a grant from the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs (Rosmolodezh) and with the assistance of the Student Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the 14-35 Center for Sociological Research, and the Commission of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation for the Development of Higher Education and Science.

At the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation (CCR) forum, a new system of state migration policy was discussed. Vladimir Volokh, professor of the Department of Public Administration and Political Technologies at the State University of Management and a member of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations, spoke.

In his opening remarks, Vladimir Zorin, Chairman of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation's Commission on Interethnic, Interreligious Relations, and Migration, noted that the meeting was discussing a strategic planning document, which is a compelling argument for strengthening the country's sovereignty and security.

Alexander Perezhogin, Head of the Information Support Department for the Implementation of State Migration Policy at the Department of Digital Development and Information Technology of the Service for Citizenship and Registration of Foreign Citizens of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, discussed the practical mechanisms for implementing the concept.

In his speech, Professor Volokh emphasized that the Concept of State Migration Policy for 2026–2030, approved by decree of the President of Russia, was the result of a broad public debate involving government officials, experts, and public organizations at the federal and regional levels. Vladimir Aleksandrovich emphasized that the new doctrine will prioritize the implementation of new control and automation tools, as well as the targeted, organized recruitment of migrant workers. After all, the document, for the first time, enshrines the creation of a digital profile for foreign citizens and the development of a unified system for interdepartmental data exchange. Furthermore, the concept provides for facilitating the relocation to Russia of foreigners who share traditional Russian spiritual and moral values, as well as assessing the effectiveness of agencies.

Experts noted the importance of business participation in implementing migration policy. Proposals were made to improve the digital maturity of services, reduce paperwork, and create a registry of unscrupulous intermediaries. Company representatives expressed confidence that automating notification procedures will reduce errors and the risk of counterfeiting.

Participants in the thematic section discussed issues related to the stay of migrant children in the country, including education and Russian language proficiency. The need to develop an adaptation infrastructure and differentiated approach to migrant and refugee children to prevent their social isolation was emphasized.

The speakers agreed that the updated concept will become an effective tool for strengthening sovereignty, security, and integration, and that its successful implementation is impossible without the active participation of civil society. It was decided to continue working on the proposals in working groups and submit them to the relevant agencies for inclusion in the action plan through 2030.

Before National Unity Day, third- and fourth-year students majoring in Advertising and Public Relations, led by instructors Olga Vasilyeva and Alexandra Timokhovich, visited the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 to refresh their memories of the Napoleonic Wars.

During the tour, the children examined over 2,000 exhibits and learned about the exploits of Russian soldiers and commanders who demonstrated impressive courage and selflessness. "I was particularly struck by the 'Road to Triumph' hall, dedicated to the Russian army's foreign campaigns and the decisive battles leading to victory over Napoleon. The exhibit vividly illustrates the journey from the expulsion of the invaders from Russia to the complete defeat of the French army, highlighting the genius of the commanders and the indomitable spirit of the Russian people. This is not just a chronology of victories, but a story of the unity of nations in the struggle for freedom," shared Emilia Vasilenko.

The museum's exhibition is structured chronologically, from the early 19th century to the end of the pan-European confrontation of 1815. Display cases feature reconstructed uniforms of the Russian and French armies, weapons, and authentic items from soldiers' everyday lives. Modern multimedia technologies make the visit interactive and visual.

"When you stand before the authentic uniform of a private from the Pavlovsky Grenadier Regiment, and interactive battle maps come to life on the wall, it's a powerful experience. This combination allows you to study the tactical aspects of the battle in detail. We felt how important it is to preserve the memory of the past and share it with others," said Ekaterina Smirnova.

Students were able to experience the world of commanders-in-chief, see the personal belongings of Emperors Alexander I and Napoleon Bonaparte, and the monumental paintings of Vasily Vereshchagin and the final hall with military trophies vividly demonstrated the triumph of the Russian army.

"The museum visit was a true journey through history, helping us feel the spirit of the times and understand how culture and communication intertwine even in a museum setting. For us, communications students, the museum became an example of how to connect with an audience without words—through emotion, aesthetics, and atmosphere. The combination of historical accuracy, modern technology, and rare exhibits makes the museum's exhibition not just educational, but truly vibrant and emotional," noted Angelina Igoshina.

Can holding a military review in the capital of a country at war change history? Our answer: yes. On November 7, 1941, the traditional military parade in honor of the anniversary of the October Revolution took place on Moscow's Red Square. The parade took place during the Battle of Moscow, when the front line was just a few dozen kilometers from the capital. We showed the world: the Red Army and the Soviet Union were determined to defend their homeland under any circumstances.

The situation the day before

In October 1941, the military situation near Moscow was dire. On October 15, the USSR State Defense Committee issued a decree "On the evacuation of the capital of the USSR, Moscow." In the event of an enemy entry into the city, the NKVD was ordered to blow up the remaining factories, warehouses, and institutions, as well as the electrical equipment of the metro. That same day, the USSR government, the Supreme Soviet, the People's Commissariat of Defense, diplomatic missions, and cultural institutions began to be evacuated to Kuibyshev (now Samara).

On October 20, a state of siege was declared in Moscow and the surrounding areas. Panicked rumors spread throughout the city that the country's top leadership—Joseph Stalin and members of the Politburo—had fled the capital.

To stem the panic and boost public morale, on October 24, Joseph Stalin summoned Lieutenant General Pavel Artemyev, commander of the Moscow Military District, and Lieutenant General Pavel Zhigarev, commander of the Red Army Air Forces, and ordered preparations for the parade to be held in complete secrecy. Most of the soldiers and commanders were unaware until the very last minute that they would be marching across the cobblestones of Red Square. At the last minute, the start time of the military review was also moved up from the usual 10:00 a.m. to two hours earlier.

March of the Defenders

On the cloudy and snowy day of November 7, 1941, low clouds covered Moscow. Aircraft overflights were cancelled due to the blizzard, but the Kremlin stars and the mausoleum were unmasked, as enemy aircraft would have been unable to attack the capital in such weather. By eight o'clock in the morning, the Moscow Garrison troops stood in parade formation on Red Square. Lieutenant General Pavel Artemyev, commander of the Moscow Military District, commanded, and the legendary Marshal Semyon Budyonny reviewed the parade.

The entire top leadership of the USSR gathered at the mausoleum's podium. After the traditional parade of parade units and the report to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Joseph Stalin addressed the troops and the nation with a speech in which he emphasized: "The main goals of the German Operation Typhoon were not achieved; the Nazis failed to take the capital with a rapid offensive."

A total of 28,467 people participated in the parade. When the parade concluded, the military units withdrew to their bases, almost immediately heading to the front.

Our troops in the battle for Moscow

Fierce and stubborn fighting raged in the western part of Moscow as part of the defensive phase of the Battle of Moscow. Along with everyone else, the capital was defended by staff and students of the Moscow Engineering and Economics Institute (now the State University of Management).

Two platoons were formed from MIEI volunteers, which swelled the ranks of the 3rd Moscow Communist Division. The division's regiments were stationed along the Leningrad Highway from Khimki to Solnechnogorsk. Many MIEI volunteers also fought on the Rzhev-Vyazma line as part of the 7th People's Militia Division, which suffered heavy losses in these battles.

A harbinger of victory

The parade boosted the morale of the military and the population. For many contemporaries, celebrating the anniversary of October in wartime conditions came as a surprise, while frontline soldiers and home front workers considered it a sign that Moscow would endure. It's especially worth noting that the German command planned to capture the capital by November 7 and, on that day, hold its own celebration on Red Square—a parade of Nazi troops. Therefore, the Soviet army's military parade was particularly significant, emphasizing that the Nazi invaders would not succeed. Less than a month passed, and our soldiers turned the tide of the Battle of Moscow by launching a counteroffensive. Footage of the parade was later included in the documentary "The Defeat of the Nazi Troops near Moscow," which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

For 20 years now, November 7th has been celebrated in Russia as Military Glory Day, in honor of the 1941 military parade on Red Square.
