Today, the Yandex Education student camp on NLP (Natural Language Processing) started at the Novosibirsk State University. It is attended by 100 students from IT departments of universities from all over the country. In two weeks, the participants will master key approaches to text processing, as well as work with large language models BERT, GPT and YandexGPT (used for content analysis and generation) in practice. The first week of the student camp is devoted to getting acquainted with key approaches to NLP. Participants will understand the architecture of transformers (models that use the attention mechanism for fast learning), study methods of adaptation and interpretation of models, and master the tasks of classification, generation and error tolerance. They will also study advanced technologies: attention mechanisms, autoregressive models, multimodality and RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation). In the second week, students will focus on practice: they will work with data analysis and the final defense of a project that solves real problems at the intersection of science and industry.

Kirill Barannikov, Head of Strategic Development of Higher Education at Yandex Education, notes:

— We focus on new formats of education, and student camps are one of them. Full-time intensive programs are open to students from all over Russia. They provide not only relevant knowledge, access to big tech technologies, but also the opportunity to meet practicing industry experts and teachers from the country's strongest universities. NSU developed a board game "Startup Race"

NSU Startup Studio developed a board game "Startup Race", which simulates the actions of a startup in a real market. The game includes all stages of a startup's life – from developing an idea to exiting the project. It allows you to show students and anyone interested in and planning to engage in entrepreneurship in a simple form what awaits them in the market. The game is implemented in a rare genre of "strategic puzzle", at the moment there are no analogues on the market. In the near future, a boxed version of the game will appear, which will be available for pre-order. Anyone can buy it.

The game is structured as follows: participants roll dice in accordance with the stage of the startup's life, which is announced in advance by the game host. They draw cards from the deck, presented as Tetris figures. The figures build a line, which, in essence, reflects the entire life cycle of the project. Cards or figures are opportunities (for example, fundraising) or risks.

The first stage of startup development is the idea, when the project is just emerging. It is the easiest for players, since at the very beginning, participants have the most cards and it is easiest to lay the foundation for further development of the project. The next stage is MVP (Minimum Viable Product), that is, the creation of a minimum viable product. At this stage, some obstacles to the development of the project appear, for example, the idea has not come true or the participant cannot achieve certain technical indicators. The number of figures decreases.

The next stage is Product-Market Fit (PMF), i.e. checking the product's compliance with the market. At this stage, players develop a concept taking into account the real market situation, a marketing plan, and the project gets its first real clients. At the same time, risks arise that can destroy the project.

Next comes the scaling stage, when the project can already attract fundraising funds, which is also reflected in the game. Fundraising funds are special cards that provide a significant boost to the further development of the project. The last stage is exiting the project, which is associated with the greatest risks for the creator. Investments can also be attracted at this stage, but the opportunities for scaling are limited. This is one of the longest stages for the project and its founder. Possible exit strategies include selling the business, shares, public offering of shares (IPO), etc.

— A player can develop several projects simultaneously and build different strategies on several markets — tracks. It is very important that your main project, on which you place a high bet, has repeating figures. There are risks — these are cards that can remove one of the figures within the entire chain, which can lead to the collapse of the project. There are specialized cards — fundraising, which, on the contrary, give you additional opportunities. In terms of Tetris, these are the most “favorable” figures — for example, a long straight line. You can simultaneously invest in several projects or develop only one, but in any case, your task is to successfully develop the project, go through all the stages and bring the startup to the final stage as quickly as possible, — explained Konstantin Kravtsov, an employee of the NSU Startup Studio.

The game simulates market competition, so within its framework you can hinder or, conversely, help your rivals. Also here are such mandatory elements of entrepreneurial activity as risk assessment and diversification, choice of development strategy – conservative or risky. Thus, the game in a simplified mechanical form simulates the actions of a person who develops his startup on the market.

The game is designed for different groups of people, including those who are not very knowledgeable about the startup market; children also actively play it.

— The Startup Race is not just entertainment, but a tool for involving the general public in entrepreneurship. It helps to understand that a startup is not just a “cafe”, but an innovative, fast-growing business that scales. The NSU Startup Studio team plans to replicate the game. At first, it will be packaged in a boxed version, and then it will be available for pre-order. Summer School "Cryptography and Information Security" Started in Saint Petersburg

From July 7 to 21, the summer school "Cryptography and Information Security" is taking place at the Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. NSU student develops software for configuring SKIF accelerator

As is known, SKIF is a mega-science facility that has become the first in Russia and the most powerful source of fourth-generation synchrotron radiation in the world. This complex opens up the broadest possibilities for research in a variety of fields – from materials science to medicine. Due to the high brightness and coherence of the radiation, SKIF allows you to literally "look inside" a substance, obtain ultra-precise data on its structure and behavior. The implementation of such projects significantly strengthens Russia's position in international scientific cooperation and creates a technological base for breakthrough developments in science-intensive industries.

The program created by Vladislav is a configuration database. It stores information about the accelerator devices and allows it to be automatically transferred to the control systems.

— Essentially, this is a description of a number of parameters of SKIF devices, which is then transferred to the control software. That is, my program provides other programs with up-to-date data for working with the accelerator hardware, — says Vladislav Rodyakin, a bachelor's degree graduate Physics Department of NSU.

The work on the program became Vladislav's final qualification work. He did it as part of a team of employees of the Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS, which is responsible for the automation of processes in the SKIF project and other Russian accelerators. The software was developed from October to May and took about 20 hours a week for several months. Now Vladislav continues to support and improve his system based on requests received during operation.

— I especially liked that working at INP gave me real independence. I went through the whole cycle — from database design to creating an interface, web application and integration into the management system. This is a unique experience: in the business industry, novice programmers often get routine tasks, but here I worked like a one-man band, — he notes.

Close cooperation between the scientific institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk State University has continued throughout the history of the university. This approach allows students to get involved in real research and engineering projects already at the stage of study. And the project completed by Vladislav is a vivid confirmation of this.

— Our program at the NSU Physics Department specifically prepares students to work with scientific installations and write software for them. In my third year of study, I took a course whose teacher was working on software for SKIF — he invited me to join the team. That’s how I ended up in a large scientific project, — says Vladislav.

Today, Vladislav Rodyakin continues his studies in the Master's program and works at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. His experience shows that a university can be not only a place of study, but also a launching pad for participation in advanced projects of national and international scale.

Yesterday, the first Master's students graduated from two new programs Faculty of Information Technology NSU, launched in 2023, are “Internet of Things” and “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science”. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects that can be connected using various technologies and sensors to collect and analyze data. However, to realize all these opportunities and benefits, a qualified team of specialists is needed who have deep knowledge in a wide range of areas, from programming and data analytics to communications technology and security, and also understand the operation of the sensors themselves and the subject area in which they are used.

— IoT is one of the trends in the development of modern IT. When preparing to create and design solutions for the Internet of Things, a master's student must demonstrate a whole range of knowledge. Firstly, it is necessary to learn how to work in conditions of limited computing performance and electricity, since Internet of Things devices must provide a long battery life. Secondly, in order for your system to work, a computer is not enough, you must ensure the transfer of this data. Thirdly, where we deal with data, the task arises to ensure its safety and protection. I will give an example from the healthcare sector. We all know smart watches that measure the pulse, count the number of steps, etc. In order for them to perform tasks, for example, monitoring the health of the elderly, it is necessary to implement more complex Internet of Things tools. The question arises: since this is personal, medical data, it is necessary to provide for its correct protection. Thus, in order to work in the IoT field, you need to be able to solve a whole range of problems and be an expert in different sections of modern information technology. Within the framework of the new direction, we are training exactly such specialists, — the dean of the NSU FIT, Corresponding Member, spoke about the features of the program. RAS Mikhail Lavrentiev.

The new program is also distinguished by the fact that during their studies, master's students participate in the implementation of projects that are carried out on order or in cooperation with businesses working in the IoT area. Thus, the university's partner in organizing the new master's program was the company "Laboratory of the Internet of Things", which develops ground equipment for satellite systems, as well as the company YADRO.

Denis Enes, a graduate of the Master's program "Internet of Things" at the NSU Institute of Information Technologies, shares his impressions of the training:

– I graduated from the NSU FIT Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science and Systems Engineering. At the same time, a new program appeared in the FIT Master’s program – Internet of Things. I wanted to study something new, so I applied. The workload was heavy, especially in the first year, so it was difficult to combine study and work. However, it was worth the effort: as a result, I acquired knowledge that was different from what I received in my Bachelor’s degree, so now I have more opportunities for further career development.

In the second program, "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science," students received the necessary knowledge to work with artificial intelligence. They learned to develop intelligent solutions by participating in real company projects, as well as to apply AI and Data Science technologies in information and analytical activities for a wide range of areas of the digital economy.

— We have developed a program that allows our master's students to understand what artificial intelligence is, what needs to be done to make its systems work, how to construct a database, how to estimate the size of the required hardware base that will support the system. So, now AI is increasingly penetrating into people's everyday lives — these are solutions for automatic face recognition when entering an office or an entrance, recognizing car numbers to open a barrier, garage, etc. Such systems require a minimal hardware base. We are preparing students for the fact that it is necessary not only to build an artificial intelligence system, but to understand what is sufficient to solve a specific range of problems, — explained Mikhail Lavrentyev.

The new educational program is actively supported by partners, including Postgres Professional, YADRO, institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other companies.

— Studying on the program was very interesting and useful. If before admission I thought that neural networks were something narrow, then during the master's program this area was presented more broadly, from different sides, I discovered different areas of AI application. Chinese student Aisaiti Baishan:

— I am very glad that I spent these two years in Akademgorodok! Before NSU, I studied at Chongqing University. I decided to enroll here because NSU is very famous in China, everyone knows that it has a high level of education, including in mathematics and IT, and professional teachers. A new direction “Integration of solutions using artificial intelligence technologies” has opened at the Higher College of Informatics of NSU

The Higher College of Informatics of Novosibirsk State University has received a license and is opening a new specialty, "Integration of Solutions Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies." This is a modern secondary vocational education (SVE) program aimed at training qualified specialists in working with AI. Recruitment for the new program has already started and will amount to up to 30 people. The training is designed for a period of 3 years and 10 months in full-time form.

Graduates of the program will receive the qualification of "artificial intelligence specialist" and acquire skills in developing, integrating and implementing AI solutions in various fields: industry, medicine, education, finance and service industries. During the training, students will study the basics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data processing, as well as working with intelligent systems and robotics.

— Our new program is different in that students will work on real cases of industrial partners, train neural networks on the most productive graphics cluster beyond the Urals — this is the pilot cluster of the Lavrentyev supercomputer center, which we launched in 2024. The teachers will be research associates of the NSU Research Center for Artificial Intelligence — leading experts in AI in our country. From this point of view, our program is unique: no other educational institution of secondary vocational education in our region provides such opportunities, — says Alexey Okunev, director of the Higher College of Informatics at NSU.

Those who enroll in the new program will gain the skills of training, customizing, and implementing products based on artificial intelligence. The development of new artificial intelligence tools will be taught in this program, which distinguishes it from other programs presented at the NSU VKI.

A new direction has just appeared: the Higher College of Informatics of NSU received a license in June of this year. Recruitment is conducted on a fee-paying basis based on 9 classes, next year it is planned to receive budget places.

The NSU VKI has already noted a great deal of interest in the program, although recruitment was only recently announced. One of the reasons is the high demand on the market for specialists who can work with AI. Some IT companies, when hiring, require programming skills using AI assistants. And the new program teaches how to use artificial intelligence in professional work.

— The demand for process automation using artificial intelligence exceeds the supply of specialists on the market. In the field of AI, even graduates with the skills of a beginner programmer can find good vacancies. It is important to note that we do not need those who are doing “my first project on YOLO”. We need specialists in optimizing the performance of AI solutions, their integration with other IT products. The use of artificial intelligence on autonomous and robotic devices is also gaining popularity, — adds Alexey Okunev.

NSU VKI teachers closely follow trends in both products and market applications of artificial intelligence. Therefore, the new direction has great prospects for further development.

— Now, in addition to autonomous AI, prompt engineering is gaining popularity, that is, the creation of effective and accurate prompts (hints) for working with large language models (Large Language Model, LLM); as well as information search using Retrieval Augmented Generation (generation supplemented by search), when LLMs respond to a request based on data obtained as a result of searching in external sources. In the near future, we hope to implement these, currently advanced, developments in our courses, — adds Alexey Okunev.

NSU Startup Studio Presented Its Projects for the First Time in the Form of the Artificial Intelligence Alley

The Alley of Friendship of Artificial and Natural Intelligence was a horizontal space designed as a real alley: it had trees and a waterfall, and an interactive exhibition was inscribed into such a landscape. The alley symbolized a walk of an ordinary person through the world of artificial intelligence and modern technologies that are available on the market and that can be tried right here and now. In total, over 1,000 people walked through the alley during the day of work – from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: each of the visitors got involved in the interactive activities presented at the stands. A separate bright component of the exhibition was the game "Startup Race", which the NSU Startup Studio presented to a wide audience and tested in action.

The alley included the following technologies and developments:

1. Emotion analyzer

At the reception for registering guests of Smart Picnic there was a special camera with an interactive screen. Anyone could come up, make a face, and the screen would display the emotion they were experiencing.

The guests were particularly impressed by this invention: everyone had fun and amusement checking how well their faces were able to express emotions. The technology also has medical applications for diagnosing diseases associated with incorrect display of emotions on the face.

2. Virtual assistant

After the first stop, guests were met by a virtual animator from the NSU Startup Studio, who announced all the technologies created using artificial intelligence.

3. Emulator of human personality in voice

NSU students who received a grant created a voice simulator that imitated the personality of famous people. Visitors to the alley interacted with the simulator through their voice, trying to sell it a pen or ask a question, like in the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street."

4. Smile analyzer

The next stand was a smile analyzer, developed jointly with a doctor from the Rostov Medical University. The device, using a patented method, gave recommendations on the health of teeth and the oral cavity based on a smile analysis.

5. Game "Academ Dreams"

This stand offered to immerse oneself in the world of Akademgorodok in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Players could become virtual residents of the science town and interact with its inhabitants, creating a copy of themselves in the virtual space.

6. Swaid Monitor

It was a photoplethysmograph that recorded heart rate readings and constructed a stress index using the Baevsky method. Together with the staff of the Psychology department of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of NSU, the game "Calm Down" was developed, in which participants put on a bracelet and, while meditating, watched the stress line decrease on the screen. The monitor helped participants achieve a meditative state even in a crowd.

7. Map of emotions

Each of the visitors to the alley and the Picnic sites in general could mark themselves on the map and indicate what emotion they are currently experiencing in real time. The development is also intended for deep behavioral research: for example, what emotion and how intensely a particular group of people in a particular location experiences.

8. Games with artificial intelligence

Several separate stands presented interactive games in which visitors fought against AI – "Crocodile" and "Riddles". Separately, an interactive demo board was presented with photographs of how people interact with inventions at the exhibition.

9. Game "Startup Race"

The development was first presented at the alley and was tested in real time.

Of course, not all projects of the NSU Startup Studio were presented at the Alley, since among its participants there are more than 30 residents with their own ideas and projects.

— The Artificial Intelligence Exhibition became a kind of "frontier" for us, which could be organized at the Smart Picnic site. On the one hand, the alley became our product and even an element of the interactive show, and, on the other hand, it was also a challenge for our residents and partners — they had to show their technology to people in extreme conditions and, despite everything, think through to the smallest detail how to present a demo version of the product, what to say in the opening speech, at what points it is worth speeding up production in order to show a finished product, and not just developments and an idea. That is, the Artificial Intelligence Alley became a powerful incentive for our residents to work, — said Evgeny Ivanov, a representative of the NSU Startup Studio and managing partner of the Coion investment syndicate.

According to Evgeniy, some startups actually showed high growth rates thanks to their participation in the Alley.

— One of the projects, Lexis Voice, the very same stand with a voice imitator and the question "Sell a pen", showed a good result. The team accelerated in all directions, from development to sales market. Thus, in a month and a half, the project's revenue increased 5 times, because there was a strict deadline – participation in the exhibition, and a clear understanding of what should be ready by this time, — summed up Evgeny Ivanov.

From July 1 to 11, practical training in the field of research methods using synchrotron radiation sources is taking place in Novosibirsk at the SKIF Collective Use Center. The initiator and main organizer of the event is the Siberian Ring Photon Source Collective Use Center, and the co-organizer is Novosibirsk State University. This year, the practice, which is being held for the third time, has acquired international status: almost 30 people are participating in it — students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of RUDN, master's students of Bauman Moscow State Technical University and young scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. At Novosibirsk State University, the project is being implemented with the support of the Priority 2030 program.

— The main goal of the event is to introduce the possibilities of synchrotron research methods — first of all, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy. Lectures during the practice are given by leading Novosibirsk scientists who specialize in these areas. Another task is to prepare and attract future users of the SKIF Cosmonaut Training Center, because those students who take part in the practice will know where they can go to conduct research using synchrotron radiation when they work in science or other fields, — said Kristina Schaefer, senior lecturer at the Department of Catalysis and Absorption. On July 4, the participants of the internship spent a day at Novosibirsk State University. They were given practical classes on decoding and refining the crystal structures of low-molecular organic compounds and biopolymers, which were conducted by teachers of the Department of Solid State Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of NSU. In the following days, they will have practice on an X-ray diffractometer and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, where they will be able to apply the knowledge they have gained.

They were also given a tour of the Analytical and Technological Research Center “High Technologies and Nanostructured Materials” Physics Department of NSU. NSU ATIC conducts structural-functional and technological research in solid state physics and chemistry, studies unique nanosystems and materials. Research is carried out within the framework of such promising areas as nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, methods of nanomaterial certification, functional nanomaterials, nanostructured materials and nanopowders.

The participants of the internship were attracted by the topic and the wide range of scientific research opportunities provided by Akademgorodok and Novosibirsk.

— I am interested in the opportunity to study certain areas in greater depth, to acquire and improve skills. This internship provides such a very good opportunity. — The program I am studying is aimed at studying the synchrotron structure, we work with its components. That is why I was interested in this internship.

— I work on an X-ray diffractometer and, in general, use ionizing radiation, gamma radiation, for my research. The topic of practical training overlaps with what I do, so I decided to take part. NSU has a wide range of modern equipment. It would be interesting to collaborate in this regard, to build international connections for joint research.

On July 7, the famous Academician A.I. Maltsev Auditorium of Novosibirsk State University hosted the 6th Big Mathematical Workshop (BMM-2025) — an event in which several hundred schoolchildren, students, and postgraduates will try to solve or make significant progress in solving an interesting research, technological, or methodological problem in the field of mathematics.

This year, the event is taking place at the sites of four leading universities in the country: NSU, ITMO University (St. Petersburg), Adyghe and Tomsk State Universities. In Novosibirsk, more than 230 people from more than 20 cities in Russia are taking part in BMM projects. The English-language section of BMM, which was launched in 2024, this time brought together more than 20 students from Chinese universities.

Addressing the participants of the Workshop with a greeting, the rector of NSU, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Fedoruk noted:

— We have many mathematical workshops, but the Big one is only one. And it is no coincidence that it starts here, in the famous Academician Maltsev Auditorium, where many outstanding scientists began their path to science. Novosibirsk University has always paid great attention to teaching mathematics in all faculties, and the idea of the Big Mathematical Workshop was conceived here and in a few years has grown from a local event into an international one. The goal of the BMM is to obtain a real result, the tasks come from customers – scientific organizations and enterprises, and it itself is a satellite event of the International Forum of Technological Development "Technoprom". This focus on practical results was emphasized by the Vice-Governor of the Novosibirsk Region Irina Manuilova, who took part in the grand opening of the workshop:

— In total, more than 30 projects have been selected for the participants, a number of which have absolutely obvious practical significance and are aimed at solving problems in the field of energy, utilities, biomedicine and other industries. The authors of the best works will then have the opportunity to present their results to potential customers at the Technoprom forum itself. The organizers of the workshop can already show examples of the implementation of the results of projects from previous years in the real sector of the economy.

Examples of projects developed during the BMM in previous years and implemented in real practice include an algorithm that allows for the automation of the creation of a cutting map and optimization of the cutting of building materials, such as plywood. This domestic software has replaced foreign software that has become unavailable since 2022. The second example is from the financial sector, a model for assessing the creditworthiness of a potential borrower based on machine learning.

The Big Mathematical Workshop program consists of two intensive weeks separated by an intermodule. The BMM will run until July 19. The Big Mathematical Workshop also includes a school section, in which 50 children will participate, they will work on 6 projects. New molecular engineering laboratory created at NSU

In the structure Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies (IMMT) NSU A new laboratory of molecular engineering has been created; it will become the first specialized laboratory beyond the Urals that will comprehensively deal with such promising areas of modern medicine as the cultivation of microorganism cells, the study of virome and metagenomic analysis, and the prediction of protein structure based on the analysis of the data obtained.

In early 2026, after the delivery of the new building of the NSU IMMT, which is part of the second stage of the NSU campus, built within the framework of the national project "Youth and Children", the laboratory will be located on the premises of the new campus. The creation of the laboratory is part of the strategic project "Center for the Integration of Personalized Biomedicine, Pharmacy and Synchrotron, Binary Technologies", financed within the framework of Priority 2030 programs.

Currently, the laboratory employs 5 people, including representatives of leading research centers in Novosibirsk and Tomsk. Also, students, postgraduates and graduate students of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and other faculties of NSU will be involved in the work in the laboratory, who, as part of the preparation of their diploma and scientific papers, will participate in the implementation of the laboratory's projects. The laboratory is headed by Elena Prokopyeva, PhD in Biology, research fellow at the IMMT NSU.

The laboratory is fully focused on solving applied problems facing the modern pharmaceutical industry and biomedicine. First of all, we are talking about the rapid implementation of new methods of pharmaceutical development, expansion of interdisciplinary research, integration of artificial intelligence and big data analysis in biology and medicine; as well as the formation of a modern educational environment for training new generation specialists, including students from different countries.

The main areas of work of the laboratory:

creation and improvement of biotechnological protocols for cultivating prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms in laboratory and industrial bioreactors; creation of innovative methods for identifying and quantitatively analyzing viral particles using accelerator mass spectrometry; study of the diversity, structure and dynamics of viral communities (virosphere) in various ecological niches using modern methods of metagenomics and bioinformatics.

— One of the promising areas for the laboratory is the analysis of viromes (a set of viruses) using metagenomic and bioinformatics analysis in partnership with research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This is an advanced area in science. Metagenomic analysis is based on next-generation sequencing methods, which can be used to “read” several sections of different genomes in different samples at the same time. However, today the problem is the analysis of billions of available sequences, the number of which increases exponentially every year. Thus, advanced technologies will speed up the process of identifying new viruses, even based on already available and published metagenomic data, — said Elena Prokopyeva.

The lab plans to use machine learning models to analyze biomedical data, such as genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data, as these methods can effectively identify complex patterns and relationships in large and multidimensional data sets. The use of machine learning in biomedical research opens up new opportunities for deep understanding of biological processes and improving clinical practice.
