Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University announces the launch of a new grant competition for international postgraduate students—Best International Grant for PhD (BIG PhD) 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for young talent to receive recognition and support for their scientific achievements.

At the Polytechnic University, this competition has become an annual event and is held as part of the Priority 2030 technological leadership program. A country's technological leadership begins with a strong engineering workforce—this is the foundation upon which innovation is built and true sovereignty is ensured. Universities, by training highly qualified specialists and creating cutting-edge research, are a key link in this chain. The BIG PhD program aims to reward the most active and promising international postgraduate students in engineering and the natural sciences. Participants are invited to showcase their scientific achievements: publications, grants, intellectual property, patents, conference presentations—everything that forms the basis of a successful academic career and leads to new applied research and technological discoveries.

Applications are now open and will run until October 15, 2025. Winners will receive not only honor and recognition but also financial rewards, including grants and awards from the university.

International graduate students completing their studies this year will unfortunately be unable to participate. For everyone else, this is a chance to showcase their talent and receive additional support for their research initiatives.

For me, winning the BIG PhD competition means international recognition and confidence that my research truly matters. The competition is impeccably organized, from the clear evaluation criteria to the support at every stage. "This is a case where your persistence meets support, and together they give birth to a true breakthrough," shared Gong Bowen, a PhD student at the Institute of Energy from China and a BIG PhD 2024 laureate.

Those wishing to take part in the competition can fill out the form and send it to the contacts provided. Here.

On September 12, a seminar was held at the National University of Management to mark the release of the fifth volume of Xi Jinping's book on public administration in Chinese and English and Xi Jinping's new initiative on global governance, which he put forward on September 1 at the expanded meeting of the SCO Plus in Tianjin.

From the Russian side, the main guests of honor at the meeting were the First Deputy Chairperson of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society Galina Kulikova and the Executive Secretary of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society Zukhra Sultanova.

The Chinese side was represented at the seminar by Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Russian Federation Zhao Wei, Attaché of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Russian Federation Li Xuanye, Executive Director of China International Investment Corporation Huaming Li Zheng, correspondent of the Economic Newspaper of the People's Republic of China Li Chunhui and Deputy Head of the Moscow Branch of Renmin Huabao Publishing House Hu Zhentao.

On behalf of the State University of Management, the attendees were greeted by Vice-Rector Dmitry Bryukhanov, who noted that the State University of Management is pleased to once again host the participants of the round table within its walls.

"Our university has a long tradition of cooperation with China: back in 1986, GUU signed the first cooperation agreement with the Harbin Polytechnic Institute. As for Xi Jinping's initiatives, they require comprehensive consideration, which is what experts, including the participants of today's meeting, will do. And our university is ready to continue to be innovative, open to accepting new ideas, especially if it benefits the development of our great countries," concluded Dmitry Bryukhanov.

Next, Galina Kulikova took the floor and shared her personal impressions of the grand parade on Tiananmen Square in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese invaders and in World War II with the participation of 26 heads of foreign states and governments. Galina Veniaminovna, who has visited GUU for the first time, also noted the authority of the university in discussing the most pressing issues of Russian-Chinese relations.

In turn, the director of the Center for Socio-Economic and Political Research of China at the State University of Management (Center) Fanis Sharipov drew attention to the fact that the book "Xi Jinping on Public Administration" clearly demonstrates the consistent movement of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CC CPC) headed by Chairman Xi Jinping towards building a modernized socialist state in the context of a complex, constantly changing international situation. The expert paid special attention to the section devoted to issues of education, scientific and technological development and support for talents.

The new initiative of Xi Jinping on global governance was commented on by the leading research fellow of the Center Oleg Timofeev, who listed the main proposals of the Chairman of the CPC Central Committee on the sovereign equality of all countries, on the need to comply with international law, on compliance with the role and status of the UN based on the principle of multilateralism, etc.

Let us recall that earlier, the State University of Management hosted presentations of the fourth and third volumes of the book, and in 2024, a Chinese delegation visited the State University of Management to discuss cooperation opportunities.

A significant international meeting took place at SPbPU. At the initiative of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg and the Consulate General of Hungary, a visit of representatives of the Consulate and Embassy of Hungary in Russia took place at the Polytechnic University, aimed at restoring academic and scientific cooperation.

The delegation included Deputy Consul General of Hungary in St. Petersburg Bela Báthory and Attaché for Education, Science and Technology of the Embassy of Hungary in Russia András Márfi. Despite the difficult international situation, the Hungarian representatives particularly emphasized that science and education should remain outside politics. András Márfi and Báthory noted that Hungary consistently seeks opportunities to develop interaction and preserve existing developments in academic cooperation tracks with Russian universities, within the framework of accessible formats of international cooperation.

The negotiations were attended by the Vice-Rector for International Affairs Dmitry Arsenyev and employees of international services supervising international cooperation and academic mobility from the Polytechnic University. The meeting was held in a constructive manner and was devoted to finding practical ways to intensify cooperation between the universities of the two countries.

The central topic of discussion was scholarship support programs for students from Russia and Hungary. The current positive dynamics were noted. SPbPU provided detailed information on opportunities for Hungarian students in Russia, including quotas of the Russian Government and a unique project of the Global Universities Association — the international Olympiad "Open Doors: Russian Scholarship". Winning this Olympiad gives the right to free education in the bachelor's, master's or postgraduate programs of any leading Russian university, including SPbPU, regardless of the allocated quotas.

The parties discussed the resumption of student and faculty exchange programs, as well as prospects for creating joint educational programs, in particular in engineering, economics and biomedicine. The Russian side emphasized its readiness to sign new inter-university agreements, which will be preliminarily agreed upon with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.

Dmitry Arsenyev recalled the long-standing and strong ties between SPbPU and its Hungarian colleagues, in particular with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. An important step in developing the dialogue will be the upcoming meeting of the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental commission in Moscow in December 2025, where a separate working group on higher education will operate. It is expected that representatives of the rectors' corps of both countries will take part in it.

The delegation's visit became a significant practical step in establishing direct contacts between the academic circles of Russia and Hungary. The parties agreed to intensify interaction in developing opportunities for scientific and educational cooperation.

International Summer: Polytechnic Students Get to Know Russia

Foreign students of the preparatory faculty of the Polytechnic University from more than ten countries spent their holidays getting to know Russia and St. Petersburg. Guests from India, Pakistan, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Algeria and many other countries rested in a summer camp, made friends, went on excursions and immersed themselves in the cultural life of the Northern capital.

The camp program was designed so that every day would give new impressions. The students visited magnificent palaces and parks, cozy courtyards and embankments of St. Petersburg, and discovered the beauty of the Leningrad Region.

Particular attention was paid to deep immersion in culture. For students from Pakistan, for example, a special interactive lecture was held on "Saint Petersburg: Historical and Modern Mysteries of the Northern Capital."

The children also took a virtual journey from the founding of the city by Peter I to the present day, learned about the main museums, theaters and architectural masterpieces. The meeting ended with a fascinating quiz, which helped consolidate new knowledge.

But the main result of the summer was, of course, friendship without borders. Language barriers easily collapsed during joint games, quests and informal evenings, giving way to sincere laughter and mutual understanding. The summer camp once again showed that, despite the differences in cultures and traditions, all Polytechnic students are one big and friendly team.

The organizers and participants thank everyone who helped make this summer so eventful. The energy and openness to the world of the Polytechnic University's international students make the university community even brighter and stronger.

Now the summer impressions have become a pleasant baggage of memories, which will help to start the school year with fresh strength. Let's wish everyone a productive autumn and success.
