BRICS Smart Cities: Polytechnic University Names World's Best Youth Projects at Competition in India

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University visited Lovely Professional University in India. The visit had many objectives and included organizing a large-scale international competition, participating in key scientific forums, and launching new joint educational initiatives. The main event of the visit was the organization of the final and awards ceremony of the II international competition of projects of students and young scientists "SMART CITY 2030: Sustainable Development Management of BRICS Cities", which took place on the campus of Lovely Professional University.

The competition is organized by a consortium of leading universities: SPbPU (Russia), LPU (India), Tsinghua University (China), and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Its mission is to support youth initiatives in sustainable urban development, the implementation of smart city technologies, the creation of a comfortable urban environment, and the modernization of urban infrastructure.

The Lovely Professional University team was awarded for their project of comprehensive urban infrastructure modernization in Delhi, integrating energy, water, and transport management for the sustainable development of the metropolis by 2030. The Federal University of Paraíba team was awarded for their "Energy Urbanism" concept, which uses environmental and tax mechanisms to incentivize energy efficiency and sustainable urban policy in Natal. Olga Ergunova, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Management (GSPM), spoke at the plenary session of the AICGS 2025 Global Summit on International Scientific Cooperation, Academic Mobility, and Sustainable Development. She also participated in expert sessions at the IV Annual International Conference "Rethinking Internationalization: Co-Shaping the Future of Higher Education," and delivered an open lecture for students. A delegation from the Republic of South Africa arrived at the Polytechnic University on a working visit. The second in-person session of the "Managing International Activities in the Academic Environment" program, part of the "Academic Reserve: International Track" project, concluded at the State University of Management. Participants explored the experience of managing international activities at universities and research organizations and exchanged best practices. The session brought together over a hundred specialists, heads of international departments, and experts from universities across the country at our university. Brothers Forever: GUU students attended the anniversary of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society

The first organization of this kind in Russia turned 68 years old—the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society—has been uniting people and institutions for decades to support good-neighborly bilateral relations.

The anniversary was celebrated in a festive atmosphere at the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow. Galina Kulikova, First Deputy Chair of the Society, Honorary Doctor of the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Honored Cultural Worker of the Russian Federation, delivered a report entitled "Public Diplomacy in Russian-Chinese Relations." Kulikova has been studying China for over 70 years and has contributed significantly to the development of bilateral ties, and her experience inspires young researchers.

The forum, which brought together scholars, faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates to discuss key trends and challenges that have accompanied the transformation of Russian society over the past 35 years, was organized by the Department of Public and Municipal Administration (PMA) at our university with the support of the Russian Science Foundation and was held in the Academic Council Hall.

Liu Wei, Secretary General of the Institute of Russia at Tsinghua University, paid a working visit to Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Tsinghua University is a leading Chinese university and a long-standing strategic partner of SPbPU. The universities host numerous events annually, and our cooperation spans a wide range of areas.

The visit became especially symbolic because the day before Liu Wei, a graduate of SPbPU, was awarded the honorary title of Ambassador of Russian EducationPolytechnic University Rector Andrey Rudskoy congratulated his Chinese colleague on her new status. Representatives of the two leading technical universities gathered for a working meeting to discuss the prospects for strategic development of their partnership in a warm atmosphere. The parties agreed to update the strategic partnership agreement concluded in 2014 to give new impetus to their collaboration. The discussion focused on specific areas of collaboration—from energy, biomedicine, and urban studies to the development of joint educational programs and corporate training programs.

Liu Wei also visited the laboratories of the Higher School of Cyber-Physical Systems Control and met with Chinese graduate students, who shared their impressions of studying at SPbPU.

On October 22, 2025, in the Scientific Library of the State University of Management, in anticipation of National Unity Day, a lecture entitled "Strength in Diversity: The Language and Traditions of Different Peoples of Russia" was held for international students. The event was organized by the State University of Management jointly with the Russian Society "Knowledge."

The Russian Society "Knowledge" is a public organization that carries out educational work for young people throughout Russia, regularly hosting speeches by prominent figures in culture, art, science, and history, helping our country's lecturers be heard and find their audience.

Alexander Demanov, a candidate of historical sciences, presented the history of National Unity Day, mentioning how the people's militia led by merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky united the country. Exploring linguistic diversity, he explained how the Russian language unites over 190 peoples. He introduced the audience to unique traditions and holidays, emphasizing that unity helps overcome any difficulties, making Russia strong and unique.

At the end of the lecture, the students actively asked the lecturer questions related to Russian history, inquired about the names of holidays, and the diversity of peoples' cultures, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about the country in which they study.

The lecture was an opportunity to better understand each other, feel a sense of community, and learn how the traditions and languages of the peoples of Russia create a harmonious unity.

Star Forum at Sirius: Polytechnic University Recognizes Young Astronomers' Talents

The Sirius Federal Territory in Sochi has become a magnet for young astronomers from around the world. The 4th Open International Astronomy Olympiad was held there, bringing together schoolchildren from more than 15 countries.

Hussein Ali Krayani, a senior lecturer in the Department of Higher Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics and Management and a teacher of supplementary education at the Higher School of International Education at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, participated in the event. This is his third time serving on the international jury of the Olympiad.

Hussein Ali Krayani graded the work of the participants, who competed in four rounds: theoretical, practical, observation, and blitz. All assignments were completed in English.

In addition to his intense work on the jury, the Polytechnic University senior lecturer actively participated in the rich cultural program. One of the most memorable moments was the tree-planting ceremony in the Sochi Olympic Park, where Hussein Ali Krayani, on behalf of the entire judging panel, planted a tree, leaving a symbolic mark on the history of the Olympics.

Being a member of the jury of such a large-scale Olympiad is not only a great responsibility but also a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the international scientific community.
