The 11th International Arctic Legal Forum, "Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Arctic: Legal Aspects," was held in St. Petersburg. The forum, dedicated to the fundamental challenges of legal support for Arctic development, brought together senators, deputies, government representatives, business leaders, academics, lawyers, and students.

Andrey Rudskoy, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Rector of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, delivered a welcoming address at the plenary session. He noted the historical significance of the Arctic for Russia and proposed making the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences a permanent venue for the forum.

The forum paid special attention to young people. The Arctic Legal Hack, a student hackathon, was held at the historic Zifergauz. Five teams from universities in St. Petersburg and Tyumen worked on a pressing issue: "How to organize solid municipal waste management in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Arctic?"

A jury, headed by Sergey Karasev, Deputy Governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, evaluated the submitted project initiatives. The winning team was the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University team, which included first-year master's students from the Graduate School of Public Administration, Institute of Industrial Management, Economics, and Trade: Ekaterina Suleimanova, Danil Neustroev, Artem Yemelyanov, Maxim Svilpov, Marina Korlyakova, and Valeria Listova, a student from the Graduate School of Service and Trade. Natalia Putintseva, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Public Administration, and Sergey Timofeev, Senior Lecturer, served as consultants.

Participating in the hackathon allowed us to demonstrate our management skills and approach the situation comprehensively, taking into account a number of constraints. The topic of solid municipal waste management in the harsh Arctic conditions was challenging, but interesting to explore. A wide variety of ideas emerged during the process. We thank our mentors for their support and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug representative office in St. Petersburg for the opportunity to participate in such an event and influence the resolution of a relevant and real-world case, noted Ekaterina Suleimanova.

At the XI International Arctic Legal Forum in St. Petersburg, our team successfully presented a solution to an interesting and useful case. We put in a lot of effort, so we're very pleased that our project was noticed and appreciated! added Marina Korlyakova.

Following the forum, recommendations will be prepared for the Russian Government that could influence actual legislation.

A team from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, consisting of fourth-year students Alexander Kolosov and Daniil Milyutin, majoring in "Construction of Unique Buildings and Structures" at the Civil Engineering Institute, won the finals of the Alabuga BIM competition in information modeling technology.

The "Alabuga BIM" competition aims to identify and support future professionals capable of applying advanced BIM technologies to the design of modern infrastructure. Fifty talented students from 14 Russian regions competed for the title of best BIM designer.

The competition was organized by Alabuga Development and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Lilia Talipova, a senior lecturer at the Higher School of Pedagogics and Design, served as the expert and developer of the SPbPU competition task.

The competition task required participants to design a miniature special economic zone (SEZ) and accommodate three residents. Each team was assigned a development site with specific technical requirements.

The result of the work was a detailed visualization of the adopted design solutions and a project defense before an expert committee.

Following the competition, the SPbPU team, led by Alexander Mitin, assistant professor at the Higher School of Industrial, Civil, and Road Construction of the Civil Engineering Institute, took first place.

"The experience of participating in this competition was extremely positive. During the in-person stage, we were given a fairly extensive task, which required us to almost completely redesign our original models. Thanks to a well-thought-out plan and coordinated teamwork, we were able to fully complete the task. It was very interesting to work on the concept of our own SEZ during the remote stage, and equally exciting to accommodate new residents during the in-person stage," noted Daniil Milyutin.

"Participating in the Alabuga BIM Championship is an invaluable experience, offering the opportunity to test your knowledge and skills under time constraints. It's especially gratifying to win for the second year in a row. The competition's updated project format allowed us to demonstrate not only our technical capabilities but also to showcase an example of a well-designed SEZ concept with compelling architectural and design solutions," commented Alexander Kolosov.

A team of students from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University won the All-Russian Student Olympiad "Thermal Power Engineering-2025."

The event took place at Ivanovo State Power Engineering University named after V.I. Lenin and brought together over 70 participants from nine leading Russian universities. SPbPU was represented at the Olympiad by students from the Institute of Power Engineering's Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Energy: Anna Artser, Elina Denezhkina, Alexander Kovalenko, Artem Petrov, and Nikita Semchenkov. The team was led by Alexey Trinchenko, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Energy.

Students completed challenging tasks in key areas of thermal power engineering: technical thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, boiler systems and steam generators, superchargers, and fluid dynamics. The competition was not only distinguished by its variety of problems but also demanded flexible thinking, a deep theoretical understanding, and the ability to adapt quickly to unexpected conditions.

Three days of intense intellectual competition bore fruit: the Polytechnic students took first place in the team competition, demonstrating a high level of preparation. Nikita Semchenkov and Anna Artser won prizes in the individual competition.

An Olympiad is always a test of your ability to think outside the box. We understood that there would be a variety of problems, so we tried to cover all the topics during our preparation. However, we still encountered problems we'd never encountered before. In such a situation, the key is not to fuss or worry, but to calmly recall all the relevant formulas and try to solve at least part of the problem to score the maximum points. It's important to start preparing early, and team discussions are the key to success. I believe these factors helped us achieve a solid result. And, of course, the most important thing is to believe in yourself and the team, not to worry, to give it your all, and to calmly await the results," shared Anna Artser.

Nikita Semchenkov noted that the main challenge was the need to quickly adapt to new formulations: "The hardest part of participating in the Olympiad wasn't even the problem solving itself, but the need to adapt very quickly. There are virtually no standard problems at the Olympiad: every year you'll encounter something new, sometimes even unexpected formulations or perspectives on classical processes. You often have to combine different calculation methods on the fly, recall related subjects, and adapt to non-standard conditions. You can't prepare for such an Olympiad using notes. But you can develop what really helps: a deep understanding of theory, teamwork, and the ability to keep a cool head. Often, the winner isn't the one who knows more, but the one who gets their bearings faster and doesn't get confused when faced with a non-standard problem."

The SPbPU team's victory at the 2025 Thermal Power Engineering Olympiad was a significant achievement and confirmation of the high quality of engineer training in thermal power engineering. This success underscores the importance of systematic educational efforts, teamwork, and an understanding of fundamental engineering disciplines, and strengthens the university's position among the leaders of Russian engineering.

For the second year, the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking agency, which publishes a family of international university rankings, together with the American Schmidt Science Fellows foundation, has published a ranking assessing the effectiveness of universities in interdisciplinary research – THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026 (ISR).

This year, Polytechnic University is featured in this ranking for the first time and immediately entered the top 400 universities worldwide for interdisciplinary research. Among Russian universities, SPbPU shares 10th and 11th place with Kazan Federal University. A total of 1,267 higher education institutions worldwide participated in this year's ranking, including 51 from Russia.

"Our university emphasizes interdisciplinary research as a driver of progress and the formation of the university of the future. Innovative projects such as the high-tech production of power engineering components demonstrate the synergy of competencies in digital modeling, materials science, and energy. Polytechnic University also promotes interdisciplinary approaches in education. The MetaCampus Polytechnic University virtual system creates the conditions for acquiring comprehensive skills in digital technologies, architecture, and management. These are just a few examples reflecting the university's high level of technological development and motivating teams from various fields to unite to create world-class developments," commented SPbPU Rector Andrey Rudskoy.

In today's world, scientific breakthroughs rarely occur in a narrow, isolated field. It is at the intersection of disciplines that the most daring ideas and solutions are born. Interdisciplinary research at our university is not just a trendy trend, but a fundamental principle that allows us to create synergies and open new horizons, noted Vice Rector for Human Resources Maria Vrublevskaya.

The ISR methodology is based on an analysis of 11 indicators divided into three groups corresponding to the life cycle of a research project: inputs (19% of the total weight), ongoing activities (process, 16% of the total weight), and outputs (65% of the total weight). Within these groups, indicators such as funding for interdisciplinary research, including from industry, administrative support and promotion, as well as the quantity and quality of cross-disciplinary scientific publications were assessed.

The Senezh Management Workshop hosted an awards ceremony for the winners of the first Social Architects Competition, organized by the Expert Institute for Social Research in collaboration with the "Russia – Land of Opportunities" Presidential Platform and RANEPA. Pavel Kozlovsky, Deputy Director of the Center for Continuing Professional Education at the "Digital Engineering" School of Advanced Studies at SPbPU, was one of the winners. Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office, attended the ceremony.

The competition's scale was impressive: over 7,500 applications were submitted from all regions of the country. After a selection process that included tests and trials, only 220 of the best specialists advanced to the finals. Of these, 74 were named winners, receiving invitations to a special training program designed for future leaders of social projects. The winners represent 25 regions of the Russian Federation.

In early 2025, Pavel Kozlovsky submitted an application for the competition, which included three unique projects directly related to the activities and development of SPbPU.

The "Cloud Quest" project for first-year students at the Polytechnic University was held every September 1st from 2016 to 2020. It accelerated first-year students' adaptation to the university environment and paved the way for their introduction to the history and capabilities of the Polytechnic University. The Student Community Accelerator project was developed and successfully tested for communities at SPbPU, and later at Slavic universities (RAU, KRSU, BRU). The project aims to develop a unified vision for the development of student communities. The "Paleopark of Russia" project is another initiative by Pavel Kozlovsky and his team, allowing participants to enjoyably immerse themselves in the world of paleontology and earth sciences through expeditions, an online school, excursions, exhibitions, and master classes. Egor Ivanov and Ekaterina Romanova, students of the Institute of Secondary Vocational Education at SPbPU, won the 5th St. Petersburg Governor's Cup "Best Junior of St. Petersburg Cuisine 2025."

Professional chefs and students (juniors) from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Orenburg, and Kostroma participated in the anniversary Governor's Cup.

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University was represented by students from the Institute of Secondary Vocational Education, Yegor Ivanov and Ekaterina Romanova. They demonstrated excellent professional preparation and determination in a thrilling competition.

The competition task involved preparing "Novomikhaylovsky cutlets" and a dessert—two dishes from St. Petersburg cuisine, served in a restaurant setting, using recipes from 19th-century cookbooks. One of the requirements was to use a specific list of ingredients, such as chicken and fresh lemons.

The competition jury consisted of leading chefs, restaurateurs, and recognized experts in the culinary arts and hospitality industry from St. Petersburg and other regions of Russia. Among the jury members were ISPO teacher Tatyana Tsvetkova — expert of the "St. Petersburg Cuisine" project and curator of the St. Petersburg Museum of the History of Public Catering.

Our talented juniors presented a set of dishes called "Merchant's Expanse." To prepare the main course, "Novomikhaylovsky cutlets with mashed potatoes, wine apples on a cheese bed, and creamy mushroom sauce," we adapted Pelageya Alexandrova-Ignatyeva's recipe from the book "Practical Foundations of Culinary Art." The chicken was chopped using a food processor rather than by hand, the cutlets were baked in a combi-oven, and served as a side dish: mashed potatoes with sautéed onions garnished with olives; apples poached in dry red wine with sugar; cheese mousse with fresh dill; choux pastry chips; and a creamy mushroom sauce made from dried porcini mushroom powder.

The "Catherine's Ring" dessert was based on Ignatius Radetsky's recipe for "Viennese Sponge Cake" from the book "St. Petersburg Cuisine." It was complemented with a ring of mango mousse, frozen in a blast freezer, strawberry sauce, and mascarpone cream for a delicate touch. It was garnished with mint leaves, blueberries, and dragon fruit cubes, representing the dice on the merchants' tables.

The jury praised the originality of the concept and execution. As a result, Yegor and Ekaterina became winners of the 5th St. Petersburg Governor's Cup "Best Junior of St. Petersburg Cuisine – 2025."

Egor Ivanov shared his impressions of the competition with us: "I'd like to commend the top-notch organization. It was very important for me to participate in the Governor's Cup final, as our institute is actively developing "St. Petersburg cuisine." The path to victory was very challenging: passing an internal selection process, searching for and refining historical recipes numerous times. My greatest thanks go to my assistant, Ekaterina Romanova, as well as the entire coaching staff for their collaboration, and to the students, faculty, and my family for their help and support.

Teacher Anna Selifontova and mentor Alexander Kulgin organized and prepared the students for the competition. They made a significant personal contribution and demonstrated exceptional skill during training and in developing the competition dishes. The institute also thanks Tatyana Pishtokova, Head of the Department of Catering, Economics, and Service, for the opportunity for students to prepare for and participate in professional skills competitions, and Nikita Baklanov, a student, for his assistance in organizing and assembling the team.
