BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) — A heartbreaking new Chinese film about the Nanjing Massacre has stirred strong emotions across the country, prompting widespread reflection on the traumatic chapter in Chinese history.

The film "Nanjing Photo Studio" tells the story of a group of Chinese citizens who seek refuge in a photo studio during the brutal occupation of Nanjing by the Japanese invaders.

In a desperate bid to survive, they are forced to help a Japanese war photographer develop film – only to discover that the negatives contain irrefutable evidence of atrocities committed by Japanese troops across the city. Secretly saving the negatives, they risk their lives to pass them on to the outside world in the hopes of exposing the truth.

With its emotional depth and ruthless depiction of a national tragedy, the film resonated deeply with viewers, with its rating on Douban, China's leading movie rating platform, reaching 8.6 out of 10.

A popular comment on Douban read: “The simplicity and restraint of the narrative make each scene piercingly moving. A few images – a knife at a baby’s throat, severed heads, a river of blood – are more than enough to convey the horror. The film is not sensational; it lets these chilling images speak for themselves.”

On the Maoyan ticketing platform, a user shared his thoughts after watching the film with his two children: “At first, I was afraid that they would be scared, but then I realized: if we can’t face history, what will happen to us in the future? I want them to know the real history, which is much more brutal than the film. We will never give up an inch of our native land to anyone!”

Another user, Maoyan, described a touching moment after the screening, when a girl asked her mother, “Will there be a post-credits scene?” Her mother replied, “The real post-credits scene starts when we leave the theater.” “Indeed, the busy streets, the bustling crowd, the aromas of food – that’s the real miracle.” This sentiment captures the essence of the film’s message to appreciate the peace and vitality of modern China, made possible by the sacrifices of the past.

Renowned director Feng Xiaoning shared his impressions in a widely circulated video online: “When the film ended, the entire theater remained motionless until the last frame of the credits. Everyone was deep in thought. I am sure that every Chinese and every person on Earth with a conscience will be shocked by this film.”

According to Maoyan, by the end of Sunday (the third day of release), the box office revenue of "Nanjing Photo Studio" had exceeded 400 million yuan (US$56 million), while the audience flow in cinemas across the country exceeded 10 million times.

Thanks in large part to the film, China's daily box office revenue on Sunday exceeded 300 million yuan.

According to Maoyan's latest forecast, the total box office revenue for "Nanjing Photo Studio" is expected to exceed 3.2 billion yuan, significantly higher than previous forecasts. -0-

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University has won a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation to conduct scientific research jointly with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China).

The project “Advanced technologies of interactive multi-agent interaction and control for an intelligent cyber-physical system under conditions of uncertainty for transport systems” is led by Vyacheslav Shkodyrev, Director of the Scientific and Technological Complex “Mathematical Modeling and Intelligent Control Systems”.

The main objective of the project is to improve the efficiency of group control of the interaction of distributed industrial unmanned vehicles, as well as their autonomous operation, using new methods and models of multi-objective optimization based on the concept of intellectualization of cyber-physical systems with the architecture of interacting cognitive-learning agents to achieve a common strategic control goal.

As technology advances, the application of intelligent cyber-physical systems is becoming more widespread in such industries as smart transportation, industrial automation, manufacturing logistics, etc. However, in complex and unknown environments, these systems face a number of limitations, including insufficient autonomous intelligence, unbalanced task distribution, low collaboration performance, and limited rational decision-making capabilities. Scientists will work to address these and other issues to provide technological support for the efficient operation of intelligent cyber-physical systems.

It is planned to use the advantages of the two universities in research on interactive technologies of multi-criteria search and control, in particular in research on the operation of intelligent cyber-physical systems under uncertainty. One of their tasks is to optimize large language models using data obtained from jointly developed adequate simulation models in combination with real data. This should ensure the generation of effective decompositions into subtasks and more accurate schemes for distributing complex tasks, which, together with cognitive control methods, will lead to the formation of safe and effective schemes for autonomous planning and control when performing multiple tasks.

This is important for the intellectual development of vehicle control systems in industrial and other conditions. The practical significance of the project also lies in the fact that its results can be used not only in industry, but also to ensure public safety and in the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters.

The project is designed for 2.5 years. Scientists plan to combine their knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence and control to create innovative solutions in the field of unmanned transport.

This grant is an important victory that opens up new opportunities for international collaboration. TIANJIN, July 29 (Xinhua) — David Kolosov, a Russian doctoral student at the Institute of International Relations of Peking University, answered reporters' questions in Chinese fluently at the SCO Dialogue of Civilizations 2025 in recent days. When asked about Chinese pop culture, he immediately enthusiastically mentioned the game "Black Myth: Wukong", saying that the Chinese game is very popular. He believes that games and other forms of pop culture are becoming a new window for the world to get to know China.

According to the Global Soft Power Index 2025 report released by the British institution, China's soft power has already risen to second place in the world. In recent years, Chinese pop culture has attracted the attention of the world. With a creative combination of modern and traditional elements, and the support of social media and digital platforms, Chinese online literature, web series and online games, as well as films, clothing, music and other cultural products, have gained increasing popularity among audiences around the world.

Devinder Kumar, an Indian expert at the Communication Center for Central-Eastern Europe and Central-South Asia under the Foreign Languages Administration of China, believes that the game “Black Myth: Wukong” deeply combines traditional myths and digital technology, giving a new life to the classics in the gaming world.

Games are gradually becoming one of the important means for overseas youth groups to experience Chinese culture. In 2024, the actual sales revenue of games developed in China in overseas markets was US$18.557 billion, up 13.39 percent year-on-year.

Cinema is also an important form of cultural exchange and mutual borrowing between civilizations. D. Kolosov shared with journalists his impressions of watching the film “Nezha 2” with his Chinese friends: “I really liked the film, it helped me better understand traditional Chinese myths and Eastern philosophy.”

Zafar Uddin Mahmood, former special assistant to the Pakistani prime minister, who attended the forum, said, “About two months ago, the ‘China Film Festival’ was held in our city. At that time, many people came to watch the films and many young people were even ready to queue for hours to buy tickets. This shows enough that Chinese culture crosses borders and is widely spread among the youth.”

At the thematic sub-forum on multi-format exchange in the visual arts within the framework of the “Dialogue of Civilizations among the SCO countries 2025”, Devinder Kumar shared his experience of participating in the filming in Dunhuang and said that with the popularization of visual media, young creators are using film, video and digital platforms to build a “bridge of friendship” that crosses national boundaries.

Not only games, movies, web series, short videos, mini-series… more and more Chinese pop culture products are becoming popular overseas.

Adel Baktygulova from Kyrgyzstan, who is studying at Tsinghua University, shared her love for Chinese internet literature and web series, saying that these works are welcomed by young people around the world due to their unique imagination and rich emotional undertones.

“Going abroad” of Chinese popular culture is not a mechanical “export” but an adaptation to the local cultural context to resonate with local audiences. Devinder Kumar said that nowadays, many Chinese works of internet literature and web series have been translated into Indian languages, which can be easily watched on mobile apps. The series are also dubbed by professional actors, so that local audiences can easily immerse themselves in them.

The recently released 56th “Statistical Report on China's Internet Development” shows that in 2024, the overseas Internet literature market size exceeded 5 billion yuan, and the number of overseas users exceeded 350 million. A number of web series that entered the international market have received wide praise from viewers and achieved commercial success.

Many young people from SCO countries who attended the event noted that Chinese popular culture is based on deep cultural connotations and has transcended national boundaries through innovative forms of expression, causing resonance and building a bridge for exchange of opinions and dialogue among youth groups. A. Baktygulova believes that the deep, original and creative traditional Chinese culture is a rich source of innovation in popular culture.

Devinder Kumar said overseas audiences are interested in the "East" and "new cultural experiences," while the integration of modern technology and the constant renewal of outstanding works of Chinese pop culture are attracting more and more young people. -0-

BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) — The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) unveiled the ScienceOne model at the 2025 World Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI), marking a major breakthrough in AI innovation.

Designed to analyze complex scientific data (including waveforms, spectra, and fields), ScienceOne integrates literature mining, knowledge-based reasoning, and tool coordination capabilities, aiming to become the intelligent foundation for technological innovation across multiple fields.

Current approaches rely heavily on retraining generic models with industry-specific data and developing isolated tools for specific domains. This paradigm faces three key limitations: fragmented scientific data systems, a lack of specialized inferential analysis capabilities, and closed research ecosystems.

To overcome these problems, 12 ANC institutes, including the Institute of Automation, the Center for Information Networks and Computing, the National Science Library, and the Institute of High Energy Physics, jointly developed ScienceOne.

The model has achieved a comprehensive understanding of complex scientific data (including waveforms, spectra and fields) by integrating key capabilities of literature mining, logical knowledge analysis and computational tool coordination. Researchers can easily use the capabilities of this model at various stages of scientific work.

Built on open-source Chinese models with deep scientific adaptation, ScienceOne combines a suite of unique models designed for common scientific data types, as well as specialized tools such as AlphaFold and MatterGen.

It demonstrates a systematic mastery of the fundamental principles, laws, and specialized knowledge in fundamental disciplines, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, earth sciences, and biology.

The assessments confirmed its leading performance in mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology, with leading capabilities in scientific professional tool recall and scientific reasoning. ScienceOne also demonstrated outstanding results in the Humanity's Last Exam (HLE).

Based on ScienceOne, the research team developed two scientific intelligent agents.

One is designed to help researchers analyze articles in depth, write reviews, and evaluate research topics and technical approaches. It has access to 170 million scientific publications and open source data in real time. With its support, literature review tasks that previously took 3-5 days are now completed in 20 minutes.

The second agent lowers the threshold for using scientific tools by providing autonomous planning of over 300 scientific computing tools. It automatically identifies research tasks and intelligently selects the optimal tools, increasing the efficiency of the scientific process.

Accelerating interdisciplinary discoveries, ScienceOne currently powers the X-Cell digital cell platform in the field of automatic identification of biological targets, improves the efficiency of particle modeling at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, improves the accuracy of molecular predictions in chemistry, optimizes the global coordination of telescopes for astronomy, and promotes innovation in the design of high-speed rail systems. -0-

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Thousands are sold in Moscow every year improvement projects in different urban areas: from courtyards andparks to the streets and areas near transport facilitiesSergei Sobyanin reported this in on your telegram channel.

“This year, there are plans to put about 700 city streets in order, including three major outbound highways: Profsoyuznaya Street with 60th Anniversary of October Avenue,

Volgogradsky Prospect with Marxistskaya Street and Shchelkovskoye Highway with Krasnoprudnaya and Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya Streets,” the Mayor of Moscow wrote.

Source: Sergei Sobyanin's Telegram channel @mos_sobyanin

Shchyolkovskoye Highway is one of the largest outbound highways in Moscow, with about 570,000 city residents living nearby. It handles more than 22,000 vehicles per day. There are 51 public transport routes along the highway, with a daily passenger flow of 250,000 people.

The comprehensive improvement of Shchelkovskoye Shosse, Krasnoprudnaya and Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya streets began in April 2025. Specialists are carrying out work on the section from Komsomolskaya Square to the Moscow Ring Road with a total length of 8.9 kilometers. The main objective is to make the urban environment more functional and comfortable for local residents, while maintaining the transport function of the highway.

The implementation of the project will reduce the load on sections of Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya Street from Preobrazhensky Val Street to Khalturinskaya Street by seven percent, Shchyolkovskoye Highway from Montazhnaya Street to the exit to the Moscow High-Speed Diameter by 11 percent, Khalturinskaya Street from Otkrytoye Highway to Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya Street by six percent.

Instead of outdated stops, specialists will install nine modern pavilions. Thanks to the infrastructure upgrade, as well as due to the adjustment of traffic lights and the provision of priority to city transport, its travel speed will increase by 17 percent.

More than 720 benches and trash bins will be placed on the sidewalks and in other suitable places. 38 new information steles will help to find your way around. Shchyolkovskoye Highway will become lighter and safer in the evening and at night thanks to the replacement of 70 lanterns and more than 1.6 thousand old gas-discharge lamps with LED ones. At unregulated pedestrian crossings, specialists will install contrast lighting supports.

By creating 123 thousand square meters of lawns and planting more than 700 large trees, Shchyolkovskoye Highway will become much greener. To add color to the autumn-winter landscape, four decorative compositions of coniferous plants will be created on the scenic sections of the highway.

To improve the appearance of the highway, decorative cladding will appear near ventilation shafts and other engineering structures. Thanks to it, they will become attractive accents of the urban environment.

The specialists will also replace the surface of about 150 thousand square meters of sidewalks and more than 450 thousand square meters of roads, remove overhead cable lines underground and install an additional drainage system.

At the moment, 43 percent of the work has been completed. About 240 people and more than 70 units of equipment are involved.

"We began the comprehensive improvement of Shchyolkovskoye Highway with Krasnoprudnaya and Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya Streets in April 2025. Large-scale, voluminous work is being carried out on the section from Komsomolskaya Square to the Moscow Ring Road. We plan to finish them this fall," the Moscow Mayor wrote in

on your telegram channel.
