ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, local authorities said.

According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the tremors were registered in the Sindirgi district at 19:53 local time /16:53 GMT/.

Footage shown by NTV showed the collapsed building and people trying to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media X that the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and neighboring provinces, prompted AFAD and all relevant agencies to immediately begin field inspections.

“There have been no reports of any unfavorable situation at this time, and we are closely monitoring the development of the situation,” said A. Yerlikaya. –0–

HONG KONG, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The total number of local companies registered in Hong Kong exceeded 1.5 million by the end of July, while the number of companies from other regions that chose Hong Kong to conduct their business activities was more than 15,000, both reaching historical highs, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Lee Jiachao said Sunday.

From January 2023 to July 2025, the local investment promotion office helped 1,333 companies set up or expand their businesses in Hong Kong, attracting HK$174 billion (US$22.17 billion) in direct investment in the first year of operation and creating more than 19,000 new jobs, Li Jiachao said in a video message posted on social media on Sunday.

Li Jiachao also stressed the function and advantages of Hong Kong as a dual platform, which can, on the one hand, attract foreign investment to develop Hong Kong businesses and enter the Chinese mainland market, and, on the other hand, help companies in the mainland enter international markets.

Hong Kong continues to attract leading international and national companies to set up and expand their businesses in the region, boosting the local economy and creating new jobs, he said.

In the future, the HKSAR government will continue to work together to develop promising emerging markets to expand business opportunities for Hong Kong and mainland companies, balance their investment portfolios, and counter geopolitical challenges, Li concluded. –0–

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he is determined to move forward with a newly approved plan to take control of Gaza City, a plan that has drawn international condemnation.

Israel “has no choice but to finish what it started and completely defeat the Palestinian Hamas movement,” B. Netanyahu said at a press conference for foreign media in Jerusalem.

“Our goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to liberate it,” the Israeli Prime Minister emphasized.

B. Netanyahu noted that even if Hamas is “completely defeated,” Israel’s post-war plan envisages maintaining control over security in the Palestinian enclave and full control over the territory between Gaza and Israel, where a “buffer zone” will be created.

He said daily life in Gaza would be governed by a "civil administration" under the auspices of an international entity that is neither Israel nor the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority.

Netanyahu also denounced what he called a “global campaign of lies” as condemnation of the plan grew both internationally and within Israel. He rejected claims that the Jewish state was deliberately starving Palestinians, despite evidence in the form of photographs, videos, testimonies from local journalists, international medical experts who visited Gaza, UN experts and human rights groups.

At least five more people died of starvation and exhaustion on Sunday in Gaza, health officials said, bringing the death toll from Israeli airstrikes since Oct. 7, 2023, to at least 61,430. –0–

ALMATY, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed prospects for resolving the Ukrainian conflict during a telephone conversation, the Kazakh leader's official website reported on Sunday.

K.-Zh. Tokayev stated that the Kazakh people have sincere respect for the Ukrainian people, their history, culture and language. He noted Kazakhstan's unconditional interest in establishing lasting peace in Ukraine based on the principles of international law.

The President of Kazakhstan recalled that Astana has initially advocated a joint search for a formula for peace on a fair basis and has consistently spoken out in favor of compliance with the UN Charter, the inviolability of the borders of sovereign states and their territorial integrity.

According to K.-Zh. Tokayev, in the current extremely difficult situation it is important to approach the resolution of the conflict in a balanced and rational manner, ensuring the preservation and protection of Ukrainian statehood. He noted that all parties should act in accordance with the ancient wisdom “a bad peace is better than a good quarrel.”

The Kazakh leader emphasized that he fully understands the complexity of the territorial problem, which often becomes an insurmountable obstacle to reaching an agreement on peace and even a truce. The main priority is the preservation of Ukrainian statehood based on unshakable international guarantees of Ukraine's security, added K.-Zh. Tokayev.

In addition, it was also noted that Kazakhstan intends to continue active cooperation with Ukraine in various areas of mutual interest. –0–

BISHKEK, Aug. 10 /Xinhua — The international cultural and environmental festival "Snow Leopard | Ak Ilbirs" was held from August 9 to 10 in the picturesque Karala-Archa jailoo on the southern shore of Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk-Kul, bringing together hundreds of guests from Kyrgyzstan and foreign countries.

According to the festival organizers, the event brought together science, art and traditions of nomadic peoples, and its main goal was to draw attention to the protection of the snow leopard and the development of sustainable ecotourism.

During the festival, guests took part in scientific lectures and discussions on the biodiversity of the Tien Shan Mountains. They were shown the hunting traditions of Salbuurun, horse racing, archery and performances of the berkutchi. Ecologists and zoologists from Kyrgyzstan, other SCO countries, Turkey and Western countries shared new data on the state of the rare predator population and measures to preserve it.

The cultural program combined the Manas epic performed by manaschy, folk poetry of akyns, melodies of komuz players and performances of ethno-ensems. Spectators watched with interest the national games of ordo, toguz korgool and alysh. The festival area included eco-zones without plastic, where master classes on waste recycling and sustainable lifestyle were held.

The mountain race “In the Footsteps of the Snow Leopard”, which took place on August 10, had a bright finale. Participants from different countries covered picturesque routes along the slopes of Tien Shan.

As the festival organizers noted, the event is planned to be held annually. This will help make it an important part of the country's tourist calendar and a platform for international cooperation in the field of ecology and preservation of cultural heritage. –0–

ABUJA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Nigeria will not change its stance against accepting deportees from the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kimiebi Ebienfa said, adding that Africa's most populous country will never accept "additional baggage" to its existing socio-economic problems.

In an interview published by local newspaper Saturday Punch, K. Ebienfa said no amount of pressure from Washington could persuade Nigeria to reverse its decision to reject some foreign nationals deported from the US, some straight from prison.

"Even if other African countries accept deportees from the United States, Nigeria will not accept them," he said, adding that the country has its own problems.

Last month, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar told local media that Nigeria, which has a population of more than 200 million, is unable to accommodate deported foreigners, especially those with potential criminal records. –0–
