ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, local authorities said.

According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the tremors were registered in the Sindirgi district at 19:53 local time /16:53 GMT/.

Footage shown by NTV showed the collapsed building and people trying to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media X that the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and neighboring provinces, prompted AFAD and all relevant agencies to immediately begin field inspections.

HONG KONG, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — The total number of local companies registered in Hong Kong exceeded 1.5 million by the end of July, while the number of companies from other regions that chose Hong Kong to conduct their business activities was more than 15,000, both reaching historical highs, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Lee Jiachao said Sunday.

From January 2023 to July 2025, the local investment promotion office helped 1,333 companies set up or expand their businesses in Hong Kong, attracting HK$174 billion (US$22.17 billion) in direct investment in the first year of operation and creating more than 19,000 new jobs, Li Jiachao said in a video message posted on social media on Sunday.

JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he is determined to move forward with a newly approved plan to take control of Gaza City, a plan that has drawn international condemnation.

Israel “has no choice but to finish what it started and completely defeat the Palestinian Hamas movement,” B. Netanyahu said at a press conference for foreign media in Jerusalem.

“Our goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to liberate it,” the Israeli Prime Minister emphasized.

B. Netanyahu noted that even if Hamas is “completely defeated,” Israel’s post-war plan envisages maintaining control over security in the Palestinian enclave and full control over the territory between Gaza and Israel, where a “buffer zone” will be created.

AMMAN, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Jordan will host a trilateral meeting between Syria and the United States on Aug. 12 to discuss the situation in Syria, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

As noted in the statement by the department, the meeting will discuss ways to facilitate the restoration of Syria based on ensuring security, stability and sovereignty.

According to the statement, the meeting will be attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the transitional government of Syria Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, the US Ambassador to Turkey and US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack, as well as representatives of relevant departments of the three countries.

ALMATY, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed prospects for resolving the Ukrainian conflict during a telephone conversation, the Kazakh leader's official website reported on Sunday.

K.-Zh. Tokayev stated that the Kazakh people have sincere respect for the Ukrainian people, their history, culture and language. He noted Kazakhstan's unconditional interest in establishing lasting peace in Ukraine based on the principles of international law.

The President of Kazakhstan recalled that Astana has initially advocated a joint search for a formula for peace on a fair basis and has consistently spoken out in favor of compliance with the UN Charter, the inviolability of the borders of sovereign states and their territorial integrity.

KABUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Afghan security forces have recovered the body of a 13-year-old boy who was abducted by unidentified gunmen in Gardez, capital of the eastern Paktia province, local TOLOnews TV reported Sunday.

The boy was "brutally murdered," the channel reported. Local authorities have launched an investigation, but no arrests have been made in connection with the case.

BISHKEK, Aug. 10 /Xinhua — The international cultural and environmental festival "Snow Leopard | Ak Ilbirs" was held from August 9 to 10 in the picturesque Karala-Archa jailoo on the southern shore of Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk-Kul, bringing together hundreds of guests from Kyrgyzstan and foreign countries.

According to the festival organizers, the event brought together science, art and traditions of nomadic peoples, and its main goal was to draw attention to the protection of the snow leopard and the development of sustainable ecotourism.

During the festival, guests took part in scientific lectures and discussions on the biodiversity of the Tien Shan Mountains. They were shown the hunting traditions of Salbuurun, horse racing, archery and performances of the berkutchi. Ecologists and zoologists from Kyrgyzstan, other SCO countries, Turkey and Western countries shared new data on the state of the rare predator population and measures to preserve it.

ABUJA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Nigeria will not change its stance against accepting deportees from the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kimiebi Ebienfa said, adding that Africa's most populous country will never accept "additional baggage" to its existing socio-economic problems.

In an interview published by local newspaper Saturday Punch, K. Ebienfa said no amount of pressure from Washington could persuade Nigeria to reverse its decision to reject some foreign nationals deported from the US, some straight from prison.

"Even if other African countries accept deportees from the United States, Nigeria will not accept them," he said, adding that the country has its own problems.
