JAKARTA, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday reiterated his firm commitment to fighting corruption and protecting forests across the country.

Addressing the nation ahead of Indonesia's 80th independence anniversary on August 17, the president stressed his constitutional duty to root out bribery and abuse in all organs of government.

“I have been sworn in to exercise my powers under the Constitution of our Republic of Indonesia. Therefore, I have no choice but to lead the efforts to combat corruption and abuses in all executive bodies and government agencies,” he said, noting that corruption remains the biggest problem in the country.

According to him, corrupt practices occur at all levels of bureaucracy, in all government agencies and organizations, as well as in state and regional enterprises.

“As the President of Indonesia, I have a responsibility to uphold the law for the safety of the nation. We are currently facing the reality of a massive drain on our country’s wealth,” Subianto stressed, adding that his administration must focus on finding quick and effective solutions to this fundamental problem.

Speaking on environmental issues, the President noted the government's efforts to ensure forest sustainability through regulations and law enforcement. –0–

ALGIERS, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — At least 18 people were killed and nine others injured in a road accident in eastern Algeria on Friday, the country's civil defense service said.

The accident reportedly occurred at around 5:45 p.m. A passenger bus fell into the river from a bridge in El Harrash. Two injured people are in critical condition.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, and the bodies of the dead were transported to the morgue. 25 ambulances, 16 divers and four semi-rigid boats were sent to the scene.

Videos posted on social media showed people wading into the water to pull victims from the partially submerged bus before rescuers arrived. Officials warned the death toll could rise as operations continued.

According to official figures, up to 4,000 people die in road accidents in Algeria every year. The National Road Safety Agency attributes 91 percent of accidents to human error, particularly driver fatigue and failure to comply with traffic rules. The poor condition of roads and vehicles, as well as environmental factors, also contribute to the high number of accidents. –0–

HARBIN, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — New evidence of the crimes of Unit 731, a Japanese army special forces unit that carried out horrific biological weapons experiments during World War II, was presented on Friday in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

These include 3,010 pages of archival documents, 194 minutes of video recording, 312 photographs, 12 postcards and 8 letters, which expose in detail the crimes of militaristic Japan related to bacteriological warfare.

They fall into three main categories, said Jin Chengmin, director of the Japanese Army Unit 731 Crime Evidence Museum. The first is criminal evidence and historical materials from official Japanese institutions, including archival documents that are key sources for research into Japanese germ warfare units.

The second category includes oral testimonies from former Unit 731 members collected during a 2018 evidence-gathering trip to Japan organized by the museum. The third category is historical evidence of the crimes collected from the Japanese public.

Newly collected evidence and historical materials reveal additional details about Japan's germ warfare system and further prove that the existence of Unit 731 was a deliberate and organized state crime committed under orders from above, Jin Chengmin emphasized.

On August 15, 1945, Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration, which announced its unconditional surrender. -0-

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine at the upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, media reported.

Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One en route to Anchorage, Trump stressed that he is “not here to negotiate for Ukraine” and will give Kyiv the right to independently resolve territorial issues with Moscow.

“I am here to bring them to the negotiating table. I think they will make the right decision,” the American leader noted.

D. Trump also stated that there is a “possibility” that the United States, together with European and other countries, could offer Ukraine security guarantees, “but not in the NATO format.”

Calling Putin a “smart guy,” Trump expressed optimism ahead of his meeting with the Russian leader, saying “there’s a good level of respect” on both sides and that he believes “something will come out of it.” –0–
