TBILISI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — The Surami bypass road, the second section of the Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti highway, part of the E60 highway connecting the east and west of the country, opened to traffic in Georgia on Saturday. The project is part of an international transport network that plays an important role in strengthening ties between Europe and Asia.

This was announced on Saturday by Xiang Jinsheng, deputy general manager of the International Company of the 16th Engineering Bureau SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited and the project manager. According to him, the official opening of traffic took place at 9:30 a.m. local time.

The contract for the construction of this section was signed in December 2020 between SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited and the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia. The project was financed with the support of the World Bank in the amount of $95.2 million. The works commenced on March 1, 2021 and were carried out by the 16th engineering bureau of SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited.

Speaking at the opening ceremony the day before, on August 15, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “This project is another step towards achieving our strategic goal – to make Georgia the central, fastest and safest link of the Middle Corridor connecting Europe and Asia,” the head of government said.

“Since the beginning of our government’s work, more than 298 kilometers of highways have been built. For comparison: up to 2012, a total of 68 kilometers were built,” added I. Kobakhidze.

Thanks to the professional approach of the Chinese side, the construction was completed in full compliance with international quality and safety standards. –0–

TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will set off on a two-day tour of Armenia and Belarus on the evening of August 18.

This was announced by the presidential adviser on political issues Mehdi Sanaei in a post on the social network X.

M. Sanaei noted that the agenda of the visits includes improving bilateral ties with Armenia and Belarus, especially in the field of trade, as well as signing cooperation documents. He added that the trip was initially planned for the end of June, but was postponed.

M. Pezeshkian's visit to Armenia will take place against the backdrop of the signing of a peace agreement on August 8 in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been in conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988.

The peace agreement envisages the creation of a transit corridor through southern Armenia, with exclusive rights to develop the project granted to the United States.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its disagreement with the presence of trans-regional players in the region and warned against changes in the geopolitics and historical borders of the region. –0–

BRUSSELS, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — European leaders on Saturday stressed the need for full respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity following U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

In a joint statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President António Costa said Trump had briefed them and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the Alaska talks earlier in the day.

European leaders called for further talks with the participation of V. Zelensky, with whom D. Trump is expected to meet in the near future.

In the statement, the leaders stressed that Ukraine must receive “cast-iron security guarantees” to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They welcomed the US leader’s assurances that Washington is ready to provide such guarantees and expressed their readiness to work with D. Trump and V. Zelensky to hold a trilateral summit of the US, Russia and Ukraine “with the support of Europe.”

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces and its cooperation with third countries should not be subject to any restrictions. Russia cannot have a veto on Ukraine's path to the EU and NATO," the statement said.

While reaffirming their support for Kyiv, the leaders stressed that Ukraine must make decisions independently regarding its territory, and international borders “should not be changed by force.”

The statement expressed continued support for Ukraine. As long as fighting continues, Europe will keep pressure on Russia through increased sanctions and broader economic measures targeting its war economy, the leaders said.

On Friday, D. Trump said he had a “very productive meeting” with V. Putin in Alaska, noting that both sides had agreed on “many points” and made some progress, but no deal had been reached. –0–

China's Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) jointly issued a yellow alert for possible mountain torrents, noting a relatively high risk of such phenomena in parts of Shandong and Hainan provinces.

At the same time, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Culture issued a yellow alert about the risk of geological disasters in certain places in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Yunnan and Shaanxi.

In addition, on Saturday evening, the MUK lowered the emergency response regime for emergency situations related to heavy rains from level 3 to level 4.

Local authorities in the regions covered by the warnings were ordered to take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of possible disasters.

Special Report: Moments of Victory – Memories of the Shared History of China and Belarus Come to Life in Minsk

MINSK, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Sunbeams broke through the thin clouds, illuminating the bustling Pobediteley Avenue in Minsk on Friday. Here, in the Victory Hall of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, hundreds of visitors were carefully examining dozens of historical photographs. They were joined by new people every hour, who also stopped in front of the photographs, peered at them and pondered.

"We know too little about the history of the Eastern Front of World War II, about the struggle of the Chinese people against the Japanese invaders. It is no less dramatic, no less sacrificial. China paid a huge price – 35 million lives. The history of the resistance of the Chinese people for the independence and sovereignty of the country was of great importance for the fate of humanity," Andrei Savinykh, deputy chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus, shared with a Xinhua correspondent.

The photo exhibition entitled “Remembering the Past, Creating the Future” in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was organized by the Chinese Embassy in Belarus, the Minsk and Jiangsu Bureau of Xinhua, China Image Group with the support of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War and the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum. About 70 photographs tell about the contribution of the Chinese nation to the victory over fascism and the military friendship of the peoples of China and the USSR.

"This exhibition is amazing in its emotional impact," said Dmitry Zhuk, director and editor-in-chief of the Belarus Segodnya publishing house. "The contribution of China and the Chinese people to the victory over fascism is enormous; without this struggle there would be no common victory for humanity."

In turn, the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus for International Affairs Alexei Avdonin noted: “We can clearly see from the photographs here what violence, what atrocities militaristic Japan brought to the Chinese people. There was a brutal occupation of coastal territories, entire settlements in China were cut out. And of course, the whole world should understand that China was the first to experience the full power of fascist nationalist ideology already in the 1930s, when Hitler was just coming to power in Europe.”

History is the best teacher and photographs are the best storytellers.

One of the photographs, showing a child crying next to a railway, touched the deputy director for research at the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War, Rimma Rum. It was August 28, 1937, when Japanese troops bombed the Shanghai railway station, killing more than 200 women and children and injuring countless others. “Many children died in this war — it is a terrible tragedy. Children also died on the territory of Belarus during the Nazi occupation, the Nazis committed a large-scale atrocity against the entire Belarusian people, and a huge number of children died,” said R. Rum.

D. Zhuk was also shocked: “This photograph is evidence of an inhuman, incomprehensible attitude towards people. This photograph contains the entire horror of war.”

Several photographs were provided by the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum. Its director, Zhou Feng, noted that this is the second exhibition of the massacre archives in Belarus since 2018, which once again recalls the shared anti-fascist history.

"This year marks the 10th anniversary of the inclusion of the Nanjing Massacre documents in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. These archives are not only a record of history, but also a memory carrier that reminds the world of crimes against humanity," Zhou Feng said.

"I have been to Nanjing and Wuhan, the cities that suffered the most from the Japanese invaders. We, Belarusians, understand the pain of this tragedy like no one else," said Igor Lutsky, Chairman of the Board of the Second National TV Channel of Belarus. "We are doing everything to ensure that the new generations that come do not forget this tragedy, the history of the joint heroic struggle."

"During the Great Patriotic War, the city of Minsk was destroyed by almost 80 percent. Only a few buildings remained completely intact here when Minsk was liberated on July 3, 1944," added R. Rum. According to her, a common historical memory connects Nanjing and Minsk, Belarus and China, "this lays the foundation for our friendship and our cooperation."

"For China, World War II began on September 18, 1931 in Shenyang, and for Belarus and the USSR – on June 22, 1941 in the Brest Fortress. It is symbolic that today the provinces of Liaoning and the Brest region of Belarus have become sister cities," said First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Nikolai Snopkov at the opening of the exhibition. "This exhibition will open a new chapter in the friendship of our countries and strengthen our cooperation in the international arena."

A. Savinykh, for his part, emphasized that mutual understanding and friendship between Belarus and China are based on common memory. “We know what war is, what hardships it brings, and we are ready to strengthen peace, ready to strengthen honest equal cooperation of sovereign nations. That is why our relations are so stable and prosperous.”

On the streets of Minsk, as in Nanjing, tall buildings symbolize rebirth. The exhibition opened on the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender. In a land scorched by war, Chinese photographs and Belarusian memories intertwine, telling of a shared struggle and unbreakable friendship.

History cannot be rewritten, victory is forever inscribed in the annals, and a peaceful future must be protected together.

“Our task for the new generation is to preserve and show this memory, to prevent lies from penetrating historical materials and distorting history,” A. Avdonin summed up. –0–

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — At least 194 people were killed and 28 others injured in rain-related incidents in Pakistan in the past 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Friday.

The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the worst hit, with 180 people killed, followed by Pakistan-controlled Kashmir with nine deaths and the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan with five, he said.

Officials said flash floods, landslides and house collapses caused by heavy monsoon rains in northern and northwestern districts were to blame for the many casualties.

Flash floods also damaged roads, bridges, houses, schools, water tanks and farmland, said Faizullah Faraq, spokesman for the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

According to him, several people are missing, and rescue teams are conducting search operations despite difficult conditions.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths and said all necessary measures were being taken to provide assistance to the victims.

According to official figures, seasonal rains have killed more than 500 people across the country since the end of June. –0–

Exclusive: Russia-Ukraine conflict cannot be resolved overnight – Chinese expert

Source: People's Republic of China – State Council News

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Although both Russia and the United States have expressed hope for easing tensions through dialogue and developing a roadmap for settling the Russia-Ukraine military conflict, the complexity of the crisis and the intertwining interests of various parties make it impossible to resolve the issue overnight, Li Yonghui, head of the Department of Multilateral and Regional Cooperation at the Institute of Russia, East Europe and Central Asia under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Saturday.

In her opinion, the main factors complicating a quick resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict are the territorial issue and security architecture. “Russia defends territorial sovereignty over Crimea and four regions in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine insists on the state borders of 1991,” the expert said, noting that Kyiv finds it difficult to make concessions even in terms of recognizing Russia’s de facto control over parts of four eastern regions of Ukraine.

The Russian Federation emphasizes that in order to cease fire and negotiate, it is necessary to resolve the root causes of the conflict. “Russia fears that an unconditional ceasefire will give Ukraine time to redeploy troops and weapons. Therefore, in the absence of strategic trust between Russia, the United States and Europe, it is difficult for Russia and Ukraine to cease fire,” Li Yonghui noted.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15. The Ukrainian issue was one of the important topics of the meeting, but Ukraine and Europe were not invited.

According to Li Yonghui, if we talk about Europe, European countries and Ukraine also played an important role in this meeting. “On the eve of the meeting, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held an emergency video conference, emphasizing that Ukrainian lands are not a subject of bargaining, and opposed the United States reaching an agreement with Russia bypassing Ukraine. Such unity of positions demonstrates the unity of Europe on the Ukrainian issue and puts pressure on US diplomatic actions,” she said.

According to the expert, the meeting of the heads of the Russian Federation and the United States has once again pushed Europe to the periphery. In terms of settling the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the actions of Moscow and Washington have had a multifaceted impact on the EU's foreign and security policy, and have also demonstrated the challenges facing the European security structure. "The EU must accelerate steps towards strategic autonomy and seek a new balance between the United States and Russia. Only by settling Russia's position in the European security architecture can we guarantee Europe's important status in the security structure," she added.

Li Yonghui believes that the meeting between Putin and Trump will not have a turning point in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, but will help advance peace talks, gradually gaining trust or bargaining on some issues. “Russia and Ukraine still hope to win more trump cards on the battlefield. As for Russian-American relations, thanks to this meeting, some progress will be made in restoring diplomatic relations and economic cooperation, especially in the fields of energy, aviation and key minerals. From the perspective of US-European relations, this will further stimulate Europe’s strategic autonomy,” the expert said.

In her opinion, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is one of the main structural contradictions in Russian-American relations. “If the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is not resolved, it will hold back the development of Russian-American relations,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

Li Yonghui noted that the channels of communication between Russia and the United States have not been severed. After the meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin, the two countries can take the first steps on important issues, such as restoring diplomatic relations and reviving energy cooperation. “However, if the structural contradictions between Russia and the United States persist, warming relations will still be difficult, and detente will be difficult,” she emphasized. –0–
