MINSK, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The new generation must preserve the memory and not allow lies to distort history, Alexei Avdonin, secretary for international affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, told Xinhua in Minsk.

A. Avdonin made the corresponding statement during the opening of a photo exhibition entitled “Remembering the Past, Creating the Future” in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggressors and the World Anti-Fascist War. The exhibition opened on August 15 in the Victory Hall of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War.

“It is very important for Belarusians to see this exhibition because it shows that the Chinese people, together with the Soviet people, waged a joint struggle against militaristic Japan in order to liberate the Chinese people from occupation,” noted A. Avdonin.

He noted that the photographs very clearly demonstrate the violence and atrocities that militaristic Japan brought to the Chinese people in the early 1930s.

"There was a brutal occupation of coastal territories, and entire settlements in China were cut out. China was the first to experience the full horror of fascist nationalist ideology back in the 1930s, when Hitler was just coming to power in Europe. After the end of the Great Patriotic War, the Chinese people, together with the Soviet people, entered into a brutal battle with militaristic Japan and won," the Xinhua source said.

He stressed that this exhibition and other similar commemorative events are extremely important for Belarusian youth, because they allow them to touch the events of the past and see real history in photographs, which is sometimes impossible to find on the Internet.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The first and second volumes of a collection of excerpts from General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping's discourses on comprehensively deepening reform have been published in China.

The collection, compiled by the Party History and Documentation Research Institute of the CPC Central Committee, was published by Zhongyang Wenxian Chubanshe Publishing House and is now available nationwide.

The first volume includes 73 major works by Xi Jinping on issues related to comprehensively deepening reform, written between December 2012 and December 2018. The second volume contains 92 works, covering the period from January 2019 to April 2025. Some materials are published for the first time.

NEW YORK, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Three people were killed and eight others were wounded in a shooting that occurred at a club in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday night, NBC News reported early Sunday morning, citing city police.

As New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference, the shooting took place at the Taste Of The City Lounge in the Crown Heights area.

J. Tisch noted that there were multiple shooters involved in the incident, adding that police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.

CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — China topped the medal table for both gold and total medals for the first time, posting its best-ever result at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Chinese team announced Sunday.

A total of 321 Chinese athletes took part in 152 events in 28 sports, winning 36 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals, the country's best result since it began participating in the World Games, deputy head of the team Zhang Xin told a news conference.

This year's Games, held from August 7 to 17, were held for the first time on the Chinese mainland under the theme "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders." China sent a 489-member team, the largest ever in the event.

GUIYANG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Winners of the "Wind from China" short video contest dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia visited southwest China's Guizhou Province from Aug. 11 to 17.

During the week-long trip, more than ten representatives of Russian youth, including winners of the said competition and media workers, visited the cities of Guiyang (the administrative center of Guizhou Province), Renhuai and Anshun.

Let us recall that the competition was jointly organized by the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow and the Asian-European Bureau of the Xinhua News Agency with the support of the Chinese Embassy in the Russian Federation. SANAA/JERUSALEM, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Israel struck a power plant south of Yemen's capital Sanaa on Sunday morning, the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel reported.

RIGA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The International Chinese-Latvian Watercolor Exhibition "The World of Watercolor" opened at the China Cultural Center in Riga on Saturday. This is the second joint exhibition of Chinese and Latvian watercolorists, the first one was held in 2024 with great success.

The exhibition features works by more than 100 artists from China, Latvia and other countries and regions.

Director of the Chinese Cultural Center Zhou Bin is delighted with the works on display: “Latvian artists have a special, very interesting view. HOHHOT, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a flash flood that hit a campsite in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Saturday night has risen to nine, with three others still missing, local authorities said Sunday.

According to the Bayan Nur city emergency management agency, the natural disaster occurred at around 10 pm on Saturday in the upper reaches of the river in the Urad-Khoutsi khoshun area, as a result of which contact was lost with 13 tourists who had set up camp in the wild.

As of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, one person had been rescued, nine people were confirmed dead and three were still missing.

More than 700 rescuers were promptly dispatched to the scene to carry out emergency search and rescue operations.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management has launched rescue efforts, calling for all-out efforts to search for missing people and dispatching a task force to lead the effort.
