BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — China is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with other countries so that scientific and technological innovation can expand opportunities for global development and modernization, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Tuesday when answering a question about the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games held in Beijing over the weekend at a regular press conference.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — The National Museum of China (NMC) announced Tuesday that it will soon hold exhibitions in Beijing and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with relevant institutions to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

CARACAS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Monday he has decided to mobilize 4.5 million civilian militias across the country to counter U.S. threats of war.

Speaking at a meeting with governors and mayors from his ruling coalition, Maduro announced plans to strengthen rural and urban militias and organize combat teams in factories and workplaces.

He described the move as a “perfect fusion of the people, the police and the armed forces” to ensure peace and sovereignty of the country, saying “the people are ready to resist any offensive.”

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sun Lei on Monday told the UN Security Council that it is of utmost importance to advance the political transition in South Sudan.

South Sudan is the world's youngest state and the country's political process cannot happen overnight, he said.

China calls on all political forces in South Sudan to overcome differences through dialogue, speed up the implementation of the agreements under the current peace agreement, and remain committed to a political settlement as the only path to peace, the diplomat stressed.

“The international community should maintain the necessary tolerance and patience, support regional mediation efforts and advocate for African solutions,” Sun Lei said. “In particular, all parties should respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of South Sudan and refrain from illegal and excessive interference or pressure,” the deputy permanent representative added.

According to him, maintaining peace and stability in the country is the top priority.

As the conflict in neighbouring Sudan drags on and continues to expand, the cross-border movement of armed individuals and the illicit circulation of small arms and light weapons are becoming increasingly visible, Sun Lei said. The international community should support South Sudan in strengthening border control and building security capacity, he said.

The UN Security Council should promptly adjust or lift unjustified sanctions against South Sudan, the diplomat said.

China stands ready to continue to play a constructive role with the international community in achieving peace, stability, development and prosperity in South Sudan at an early date, he said. –0–

KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Afghanistan's state-owned power company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has signed deals with two firms to generate 160 megawatts of coal-fired power in the northern province of Baghlan, the corporation said on Monday.

The agreements will facilitate the establishment of thermal power plants in the coal-rich Baghlan province, the statement said.

This initiative is an important step towards solving the problem of chronic electricity shortages in Afghanistan, which is forced to purchase electricity from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Iran.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — The Vakhtangov State Academic Theater will begin its tour in China with a performance of Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" later this month at the Poly Theater in Beijing, Xinhua reported.

The play, staged in 2009 by the late director Rimas Tuminas, “Uncle Vanya” will be seen by residents of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Back in 1954, Chinese director Sun Weishi staged the play “Uncle Vanya.” Thus, this play became the first of A. Chekhov’s works to be staged in China after the founding of the PRC in 1949.

KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Afghanistan marked the 106th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule on Tuesday with official ceremonies and a public holiday.

In an official statement, the Afghan interim government said: “One hundred and six years ago, with divine help and through determined struggle, the proud Muslim people of Afghanistan forced the British Empire to recognize the country’s full independence, returning control of foreign policy to the Afghan people.”

ISTANBUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Turkish authorities seized 207 kg of methamphetamine and arrested two suspects here on Tuesday in one of the country's biggest drug busts in recent years, officials said.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on the social network X that the operation targeted suspects involved in drug trafficking in the Esenyurt district on the European side of the city.
