SANAA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Senior Yemeni Houthi officials on Saturday vowed to take revenge on Israel after the group confirmed earlier in the day that Yemeni Houthi-formed government chief Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahawi and several ministers were killed in an Israeli strike on the capital Sanaa on Thursday.

Earlier on Saturday, the group acknowledged in a statement that officials had been hit by airstrikes in Sanaa during a meeting held by the government to assess its performance and results over the past year. Several other ministers were wounded and remain in hospital.

The statement did not indicate how many ministers were killed.

At the same time, the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel reported that the deceased head of government was succeeded by his deputy, Mohammed Miftah.

After the deaths of senior officials were confirmed, the head of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, said in Sanaa that “dark days are coming for Israel.” His statement was published by the Al-Masirah TV channel.

Houthi Defense Minister Mohammed Nasser al-Atefi said the forces were “ready at all levels to confront” Israel, while Houthi army chief of staff Abdulkarim al-Ghumari said “Israeli aggression against civilian targets will not go unpunished,” the Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported.

The Houthis initially denied casualties in Thursday's airstrikes, despite reports that A.G. al-Rahavi had been killed.

Israel said its air force carried out a “significant operation” during a Houthi cabinet meeting in Sanaa as members watched the group’s leader Abdel Malik al-Houthi address the war in Gaza. A Houthi source said Israeli warplanes carried out 10 air strikes on a building in southern Sanaa where the meeting was taking place.

On Saturday, Iran, which is believed to have close ties to the Houthis, strongly condemned Israel's recent airstrikes against the group. -0-

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Thanks to flourishing cross-border shopping and tourism, the China-Kazakhstan Khorgos International Boundary Cooperation Center has seen the number of border crossings further increase to 30,000 a day in recent weeks.

As of July 11, the center, which covers an area of 5.6 square kilometers, had recorded more than 5 million border crossings this year, up 73 percent from a year earlier. The center is located partly in the city of Horgos in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and partly in Kazakhstan.

As a demonstration zone for regional cooperation under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the center has witnessed ever-growing trade and economic ties among the member countries of the organization, which was established 24 years ago by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

With 10 member states, two observer states and 14 dialogue partners, the SCO currently represents nearly half the world’s population, a quarter of the world’s land area and about a quarter of global GDP. Over the years since its establishment in 2001, the SCO has evolved into a comprehensive regional organization that brings certainty and vitality to an often volatile global economic system, analysts say.

The largest SCO summit ever will take place in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, bringing together leaders from Asia, Europe and Africa. The upcoming meeting is expected to inject new vitality into the global economy by formulating a plan for the future development of the organization.

STRONG TRADE AND ECONOMIC TIES

The Chinese part of the China-Kazakhstan International Boundary Cooperation Center “Khorgos” is home to over 2,000 retail outlets, including over 200 duty-free shops selling over a thousand types of goods from over 40 countries. Each person can purchase duty-free goods worth up to 8,000 yuan (about $1,125) per day.

“Products such as chocolate from Kazakhstan and traditional headdresses of the Kazakh ethnic group in China are particularly popular,” said Lin Zixuan, the owner of one of the outlets, noting that on peak days her daily income reaches 100,000 yuan.

The active trade activity at the centre reflects growing trade and economic ties between China and other SCO member states in recent years, with cooperation spanning sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture and technology.

China's trade turnover with other SCO member countries reached approximately 3.65 trillion yuan by the end of 2024, which is more than 36 times higher than the level recorded at the time of the organization's establishment.

Despite growing external uncertainty, the momentum of trade cooperation has been maintained this year. Official data show that from January to July 2025, China's total trade with other SCO member countries reached 2.11 trillion yuan, up 3 percent from the same period last year.

It is noteworthy that in July of this year alone, China's trade turnover with other SCO member states grew by 8.5 percent to 326.05 billion yuan. Both July figures were the highest since the beginning of this year.

INNOVATIVE COLLABORATION IN EMERGING SECTORS

More than 40 wind turbines towering over the vast grasslands of Kazakhstan's Akmola region transform wind energy into clean electricity that is sent through the power grid directly to the country's capital, Astana.

The wind power plant, built and operated by a Chinese company, was commissioned in September 2023, becoming the largest in Kazakhstan at that time.

In Kyrgyzstan, a 5G network deployed with the participation of Chinese enterprises has now covered major cities, increasing the country's internet penetration from 43 percent to over 70 percent. Meanwhile, in Tajikistan, a digital health platform jointly developed by China and Tajikistan has provided full coverage for remote medical consultations, benefiting residents in remote areas.

As these projects have demonstrated, SCO member states are seeking closer cooperation in developing sectors, including clean energy, environmental protection, new energy vehicles and the digital economy.

Thanks to cooperation in cross-border e-commerce (CBC), more high-quality goods from SCO member countries enter the Chinese market. In 2024, China's import volume from other SCO member countries in the CBC grew by 34 percent year-on-year.

China plays a significant role in the SCO and is the driving force behind its development, Kyrgyz expert Igor Shestakov said in a recent interview with the Xinhua news agency.

According to Vice Minister of Commerce of China Lin Ji, China is promoting cooperation with its SCO partners in the fields of oil and gas production, manufacturing, green energy and digital economy in line with the main theme of the “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”.

These efforts are expected to help promote industrial transformation and bring closer links in production and supply chains among SCO members, the official said.

STRIVING FOR INCLUSIVITY AND MUTUAL BENEFIT

Having highly praised China for fulfilling its obligations to support SCO member countries without putting forward political conditions, I. Shestakov said that such an approach reflects the “Shanghai Spirit,” characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultations, respect for cultural diversity, and the desire for joint development.

By the end of 2024, China's total investment in SCO member states, observer countries and dialogue partners will exceed US$140 billion.

International affairs expert and Founding Director of the Belt and Road Initiative – Sri Lanka Yasiru Ranarajah said that over the past 24 years, the SCO has continued to grow and expand, demonstrating its inclusiveness as well as its attractiveness and viability. Sri Lanka is a dialogue partner of the SCO.

According to the expert, many countries want to join the SCO as dialogue partners and full members, which has demonstrated the recognition of the organization by the international community.

He added that the SCO provides a valuable platform for cooperation among countries in the Global South. When the world faces challenges such as geopolitical conflicts and protectionism, the SCO embodies “a more equitable and inclusive vision of regional governance.” -0-

AUCKLAND, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — A new report released in New Zealand's largest city Auckland on Friday has highlighted the value of investment relations between China and New Zealand.

According to the report Investment Interests – An Update on the New Zealand-China Investment Relationship to 2025, China's cumulative FDI into New Zealand increased by 106 per cent between 2014 and 2024.

New Zealand's dairy sector is a good example of an established sector for Chinese investment. Recent additional investments by Chinese investors in New Zealand companies have demonstrated the value of long-term partnerships, the paper says.

According to the report, at least 60 New Zealand companies currently have a corporate presence in China.

The report was compiled by the New Zealand-China Council and the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.

New Zealand-China Council chairman John McKinnon said increased bilateral investment could help build long-term partnerships that would expand trade and business between the two countries.

“New Zealand is entering a new period of investment and growth,” Mr McKinnon said. “As we do this, it makes sense to build on our long-standing bilateral relationship with China,” he added. –0–

/SCO Summit in Tianjin/ SCO confidently becoming a global diplomatic player — Belarusian President A. Lukashenko

MINSK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is confidently becoming a global diplomatic player and is looking to the future. The peoples of Belarus and China made an invaluable contribution to the victory in World War II. Today, in an extremely difficult international situation, it is very important to jointly protect the memory of our common Great Victory. This was stated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in a written exclusive interview with Xinhua on the eve of his trip to China to attend the SCO summit in Tianjin and events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

At the invitation of the Chairman of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, the head of Belarus will visit China for the 16th time. A. Lukashenko noted that he has known the Chinese leader for a long time. "Xi Jinping thinks strategically, looks decades ahead," he said. "In today's completely unpredictable situation, he boldly takes on leadership and offers not only China, but the entire world a clear and specific path of development. He has something that many politicians in the West should learn from: responsibility to his people, strategic thinking, and an iron will."

A. Lukashenko stated that Belarus and China are connected by the highest degree of mutual trust and respect. “For Belarus, Chairman Xi Jinping is not only a reliable partner, but also a sincere friend. Thanks to his unconditional support, Belarusian-Chinese relations have reached the highest level of all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership in history,” he noted. “In contrast to those who are trying to ‘bring democracy’ with bombs and sanctions, China shows that it is possible to develop peacefully and calmly, with respect for other states.”

The President of Belarus recalled that more than 30 years have passed since his first visit to China. “China was completely different at that time, but it immediately became clear: this country has the future,” he said. “Every time I come to China, I notice how quickly it is changing, and I admire how carefully they preserve their traditions.”

According to A. Lukashenko, China's achievements in areas where it has already become a world leader are impressive: in the production of industrial robots, the development of unmanned vehicles and trucks, and the development of artificial intelligence. China is making great efforts in the social sphere, in education and healthcare, aimed at improving the quality of life of people. "China as a whole is the brightest example of how to combine dynamic economic development with care for people," he emphasized.

A. Lukashenko said that Belarus was among the first to join the Belt and Road initiative and that cooperation with China has yielded tangible results over the years. He particularly noted that the Chinese-Belarusian industrial park Great Stone has become a working platform where enterprises with modern technologies, digital solutions and innovative approaches are created. “This is where competencies are born, new jobs are created and the future of the economy is shaped,” he said.

According to the President, he has the most positive expectations for the upcoming visit. A. Lukashenko expressed confidence that this visit provides another opportunity to deepen strategic partnership and gives new impetus to Belarusian-Chinese cooperation in trade and economic sphere, activation of joint projects in science, technology, industrial cooperation. “I am absolutely convinced: Belarusian-Chinese cooperation will only strengthen. Together we implement large-scale projects, support each other in the international arena. This is the true diplomacy of the 21st century,” the head of Belarus said.

According to A. Lukashenko, Belarus is ready to continue to work closely with the Chinese side in several key areas. Firstly, this is deepening the symbiosis of national development strategies, increasing cooperation in the areas of digital economy, logistics, high technologies, as well as searching for new ways to expand trade and economic integration. Secondly, the mechanisms of intergovernmental cooperation will be further improved to increase the efficiency of coordination and implementation of large projects, ensuring their full compliance with the common strategic interests of the parties. Thirdly, special emphasis will be placed on innovation and advanced technologies as a key driver of economic growth. The two countries have already jointly held the Years of Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation. Fourthly, Belarus and China will continue to expand humanitarian and cultural exchanges, strengthening mutual understanding and trust between their peoples.

A year has passed since Belarus joined the “Shanghai family”. A. Lukashenko said that the SCO is an organization looking to the future. Over 20 years, it has formed a unique model of regional security and development based on multilateral cooperation. The organization has proven that security issues can be resolved not through confrontation, but through joint measures – sharing intelligence, conducting exercises, building trust between states. Thanks to this, it was possible to prevent hundreds of terrorist attacks and create a system that stabilizes Eurasia. Several key conventions were signed, the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure /RATS/ was created, a threat database was formed, hundreds of joint operations were conducted. After 2020, the SCO added new key areas of cooperation – cybersecurity, biosecurity and public health protection.

"We can say that the SCO is confidently becoming a global diplomatic player. The organization offers a new approach to international relations, different from Western models of hegemony. Thanks to the "Shanghai spirit", equal cooperation and the search for compromises are ensured. The SCO integrates the Belt and Road initiative, forms the principles of digital governance and creates dialogue platforms for developing countries," said A. Lukashenko.

According to him, the economic component is no less significant in the SCO's activities. "I would even say that it should play a key role. To do this, we need to create effective mechanisms for mutual settlements in national currencies, develop investment infrastructure, logistics," the president emphasized.

He also noted that humanitarian and cultural cooperation is becoming increasingly important. The countries interact in the areas of education, justice and social protection, developing the “Shanghai spirit” of mutual respect.

“I would like to note the enormous and extremely important work of China, promoting the concept of a community with a common destiny for humanity, which is woven into the Shanghai cooperation program,” said A. Lukashenko.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. A. Lukashenko noted that the great war of resistance of the Chinese people became not only an integral part of national history, but also the most important chapter of the world anti-fascist struggle. "As a historian, I understand especially well how terrible this war was and what an invaluable contribution our peoples made to the common Victory. This is the greatest lesson in courage, fortitude and patriotism for many future generations of our fellow citizens," he said.

The head of state stated that the Xinhua Agency photo exhibition opened in Minsk to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory and the awarding of Belarusian veterans who participated in the battles for the liberation of China with jubilee medals of the PRC help preserve the memory of those events and educate young people on them.

"This is especially important today, in an extremely difficult international situation, when some are trying to distort and rewrite history, it is very important to jointly protect the memory of our common Great Victory," said A. Lukashenko. "In the future, Belarus and China will certainly continue to implement such joint projects, and will comprehensively support educational and cultural initiatives in order to preserve the truth and memory of that war and our Victory. Otherwise, everything could happen again."

Currently, the Global South is gaining momentum. “The countries of the Global South act independently based on their own interests. They refuse to automatically repeat other people’s decisions, insist on peaceful resolution of conflicts, equality and openness in the economy, advocate for the participation of all countries in solving global problems, including climate problems. This force is already influencing the world order, and its role will only increase. This is a new center of power,” A. Lukashenko noted.

“And in the future, we count on continuing fruitful cooperation with China as one of the undisputed leaders of the Global South and the entire world. For the sake of our countries, for the sake of our peoples,” the head of Belarus concluded. –0–

During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, a group of foreign friends of different faiths and races traveled great distances to war-torn China. On the main battlefield in the East during the World Anti-Fascist War, they, together with the Chinese people, wrote a majestic chapter about the victory of justice over evil, light over darkness, and progress over reaction.

On October 14, 1939, G.A. Kulishenko, leading a bomber group of the volunteer air force to aid China, raided the Japanese airfield in Hankou and inflicted serious damage on the Japanese army. On the way back, G.A. Kulishenko's plane was intercepted by the enemy, and one of the engines was shot down, as a result of which he was wounded in the chest and left shoulder. In order to protect the plane and people on the ground, the commander refused the parachute and made an emergency landing on the surface of the Yangtze River in the Chenjiaba area of Wanxian County, Sichuan Province. Two of his comrades swam to the shore, but the wounded Kulishenko was carried away by the current, and he died a heroic death at the age of 36. 20 days later, local residents found the pilot's body. They held a memorial service and funeral in his honor.

The Chinese and Russian peoples have cemented their deep friendship with their blood and lives, laying a solid foundation for Sino-Russian relations and a lasting friendship between the two peoples for many generations to come.
