Abidjan, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) — The presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire began at 8:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Many citizens arrived at the Groupe Scolaire Plateau de Port-Bouet 2 polling center in Abidjan before the official start of voting. Police officers and gendarmes maintained order.

Polling stations will be open until 6:00 PM. According to the Independent Electoral Commission of Côte d'Ivoire, a total of 25,678 polling stations have been established, including 308 abroad. Over 8.7 million registered voters are eligible to vote, including over 120,000 abroad.

Incumbent President Alassane Ouattara is seeking a fourth term. He faces four other candidates. The election is taking place amid heightened political and social tensions following court rulings barring key opposition leaders from running for president.
