Washington, October 24 (Xinhua) — The Trump administration on Friday imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro amid worsening bilateral relations, accusing him of allowing drug cartels to "flourish," the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.
"President Petro allowed drug cartels to flourish and refused to stop their activities," U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
The sanctions list also includes the Colombian president's wife, Veronica Alcocer, his eldest son, Nicolás Petro, and Colombian Interior Minister Armando Benedetti. They are accused of providing or attempting to provide support, goods, or services to G. Petro.
As a result of the sanctions, all property and interests in property of these designated or blocked persons that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the statement said.
Mr. Petro confirmed on his X social media page that he and his family are on the OFAC sanctions list, adding that his interests will be represented by American lawyer Daniel Kovalik.
"Decades of effective anti-drug trafficking efforts have earned me this measure from the government of a country we've helped so much to stop cocaine use. It's quite paradoxical, but we're not backing down and will never kneel," G. Petro wrote on social media.
