Pyongyang, October 23 (Xinhua) — North Korea's General Rocket Department successfully tested a major weapons system on Wednesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday.

It was reported that two hypersonic missiles launched from Pyongyang in a northeasterly direction hit a target on a plateau near Kwaesan Peak in Oran County, North Hamgyong Province.

"The new weapons system was tested as part of a defense capability development program aimed at increasing the resilience and effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential adversaries," the statement said.

Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee Secretary Park Jong-chon, who observed the test along with other officials, said the new advanced weapons system is clear evidence of North Korea's steady improvement in its self-defense capabilities.

“The DPRK’s actions are clearly aimed at further strengthening military deterrence, and their goal is to strengthen self-defense,” the agency quotes Park Jong Chon as saying. –0–
