TAIPEI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) — More than 100 representatives from various walks of life in Taiwan on Wednesday called for a correct view of history and the promotion of peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait at a seminar to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's liberation from Japanese occupation and the island's return to China.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

After suffering defeat in the war with Japan in 1895, the Qing Dynasty government was forced to cede Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan. Fifty years later, the Chinese people triumphed against Japanese aggression during World War II, ending Japan's colonial rule in Taiwan and returning the island to their homeland.

At the seminar, Kuomintang Vice Chairman Xia Liyan noted that the leadership of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is promoting a separatist historical narrative while simultaneously imposing restrictions on cross-Strait exchanges.

He called on the island to organize more Taiwan Strait-themed events, such as the celebration of Taiwan's return to China after the island's liberation from Japanese occupation, to help Taiwanese people gain a more accurate understanding of cross-Strait relations and deepen their sense of national identity.

New Party Chairman Wu Chengdian emphasized that Taiwanese people experienced immense joy and pride after Taiwan's return to China in 1945. This event marked the victory of the Chinese people, which contrasts sharply with the term "end of the war" repeatedly used by the DPP leadership.

The current meeting, held at a time when the DPP leadership is trying to replace that term with "war end," has profound historical significance, said Wang Chuo-chung, president of Taiwan's Meihua Media, calling on the public to always remember the historic event.

On Wednesday evening, the Taiwan Foundation for the Progressive Development of Chinese Culture held a poetry reading to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's return to the motherland at Taipei's Zhongshan Hall.
