BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — China welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.
According to a statement released Sunday by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Turkey. Furthermore, both sides will continue negotiations to ensure its sustainability. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed the ceasefire and announced that another round of talks would be held in Istanbul on October 25.
"Pakistan and Afghanistan are China's traditional friendly neighbors, and these two countries are neighbors that cannot be moved," Guo Jiakun said when asked to comment on the agreement at a regular departmental press conference.
China welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached between the two countries and highly appreciates the contributions made by relevant countries, Guo Jiakun said.
China sincerely hopes and supports both countries in their efforts to continue resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation. This will ensure a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, thereby contributing to the joint maintenance of peace and stability in both countries and the entire region.
"China is willing to work with the international community to continue to play a constructive role in improving and developing relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan," Guo Jiakun said. -0-
