Ürümqi, October 19 (Xinhua) — The 7th International Conference on Turpan Studies is being held from Saturday to Monday in the city of Turpan, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR). It also marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Turpan Studies. It brought together approximately 200 experts and scholars from 16 countries and regions, including Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan.
Conference participants engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on topics such as new scientific advances in Turfan studies and the protection and development of Silk Road culture.
At the conference, Rong Xinjiang, President of the China Society for Dunhuang and Turpan Studies, noted that Turpan was an important transportation hub on the Silk Road in ancient times. Historical documents discovered there contain various scripts, as well as religious and cultural elements.
"People from all over the world who study all aspects of Turfan studies gather here. And we provide such a platform for this study," he said.
The conference was attended by experts and scholars from more than 70 universities and research institutes, including Peking University, Renmin University of China, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, the University of Tokyo and the British Museum.
Turpan was an important site on the ancient Silk Road, facilitating cultural and trade exchanges between East and West. Turpan studies, an interdisciplinary study of Turpan's cultural heritage, has attracted considerable attention in international academic circles. Over the past nearly a century, experts and scholars in archaeography, archaeology, history, linguistics, and paleontology from around the world have contributed to Turpan studies.
Since 2000, Turpan has successfully hosted six international conferences on Turpan studies and other international thematic symposia, attended by more than a thousand experts and scientists from more than 20 countries and regions of the world. -0-
