Shanghai, October 18 (Xinhua) — China has already built 60 automated container terminals, maintaining its global leadership in smart port construction. This was announced on Friday at a press conference dedicated to the upcoming Beiwai Tan International Shipping Forum 2025.
At a press conference, Gao Haiyun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Transport, noted that in the first eight months of 2025, cargo volumes on China's waterways increased by 3.8 percent year-on-year to 6.56 billion tons. Chinese ports handled 12.03 billion tons of cargo during this period, and their container throughput totaled 230 million standard containers (twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs), up 4.4 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
From October 19 to 21, the 2025 Beiwai Tan International Shipping Forum /North Bund Forum/ will be held in Shanghai, jointly organized by the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Shanghai.
This year's forum is expected to showcase the latest industry developments in green shipping, transport network design, technical standards, service innovation and international cooperation. -0-
