Mexico City, October 17 (Xinhua) — A new trade agreement between Mexico and the European Union (EU) will be signed in the coming months and will come into force in February 2026, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday.

Speaking at a daily press conference, she noted that the Modernized Global Agreement, which replaces the EU-Mexico Global Agreement reached in 2000, “provides for tariff reductions on a number of products, which is very beneficial for Mexico’s exports to Europe, both agricultural and industrial goods.”

According to local media reports, the updated agreement will immediately eliminate tariffs on 86 percent of Mexican agricultural goods, with another 10 percent to be phased out over seven years.

According to the European Council, trade between the EU and Mexico amounted to more than €82 billion (US$95.6 billion) in 2024, making the bloc Mexico's third-largest trading partner.
