BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) — Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang on Friday warned the United States against its dangerous attempts to play the "Taiwan card" and arm the Chinese region of Taiwan, warning that such moves would come at a high cost to the United States.
Zhang Xiaogang made the statement in response to a media question about the new version of the National Defense Authorization Act passed by the US Congress. The updated law includes provisions allocating $1 billion in funds for the so-called "Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative."
The official representative stated that the negative provisions of the law concerning China constitute gross interference in its internal affairs, harm the sovereignty, security and development interests of the PRC, and undermine peace and stability throughout the world.
Zhang Xiaogang called on the United States to firmly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-American joint communiqués, to effectively implement its pledge not to support "Taiwan independence" and to refrain from sending wrong signals to separatists advocating "Taiwan independence," as well as from establishing any form of military ties with the Chinese region of Taiwan. –0–
