Beijing, October 17 (Xinhua) — China firmly opposes Japan's recent negative actions related to the Yasukuni Shrine and is making serious representations to the Japanese side in this regard, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Friday.

Lin Jian made the announcement at a regular press conference, commenting on the fact that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, on behalf of the head of government, sent an offering of masakaki (small sakaki tree) to the Yasukuni Shrine, and that Sanae Takaichi, chairwoman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, made a donation from her personal funds.

The Chinese diplomat recalled that the Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual instrument and symbol of the war of aggression unleashed by Japanese militarism. A proper understanding and approach to history is an important prerequisite for Japan's return to the international community in the postwar period, a political foundation for developing its relations with neighboring countries, and a measure of Japan's fulfillment of its commitment to peaceful development.

“We urge Japan to soberly assess and rethink its history of aggression, exercise caution in its statements and actions on historical issues such as the Yasukuni Shrine, firmly disassociate itself from militarism, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community through real actions,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson concluded.
