ISLAMABAD, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday issued separate statements announcing a ceasefire between the two sides, which later came into effect.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire to ease tensions on the border at the request of the Afghan side, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

“During this period, both sides will make sincere efforts to find a positive solution to this complex but solvable issue through constructive dialogue,” the department said in a statement.

On the same day, the official representative of the interim government of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, announced on social media the introduction of a ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Z. Mujahid stated that, at the request and insistence of the Pakistani side, the ceasefire between the two countries will take effect on Wednesday. He added that the Afghan government has instructed all its troops to observe the ceasefire until the other side launches any attacks.

The statements followed several days of gunfire on the Pakistan-Afghan border.

Earlier in the day, Pakistani security forces struck various targets in Afghanistan's Kandahar and Kabul provinces, according to security sources. -0-
