Tbilisi, October 15 (Xinhua) — Any reforms necessary for European Union (EU) membership and required of candidate countries are considered a major asset on the path to European integration, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated at a joint press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili at the Georgian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

“If the process does not end in membership, that is, of course, the country’s own decision,” E. Valtonen noted.

According to her, every step towards integration into the EU is in the interests of the country's population.

"I always tell EU candidate countries that any reform necessary for membership and required of candidates concerns the rule of law, procedures, inclusiveness, the inclusion of minorities, the development of transparent systems, the eradication of corruption, the full promotion of a market economy, and many other issues. We view this as a major asset on the path to EU membership," the Finnish Foreign Minister emphasized.

"On behalf of the EU, the OSCE, and Finland, I say: Finland would be happy if Georgia joined the EU based on the established criteria. This is a decision for the people, and the country deserves an inclusive participation process," said E. Valtonen.
