ANTANANARIVO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — Colonel Michael Randrianirina, an officer in the Madagascar army, announced on Tuesday that state power in the country was transferred to the control of a military council consisting of representatives of the army, gendarmerie and national police.
M. Randrianirina stated that the constitution had been suspended and new state structures had been created “to meet the aspirations of the people of Madagascar.”
The colonel also announced the dissolution of key state institutions, including the Senate, the Supreme Constitutional Court and the National Independent Electoral Commission.
On the same day, the National Assembly of Madagascar (the lower house of parliament) voted in an extraordinary session in the capital, Antananarivo, to impeach President Andry Rajoelina, despite the president having previously announced the dissolution of the chamber. –0–
