Mexico City, October 13 (Xinhua) — The Mexican government has stepped up relief efforts after heavy rains battered the country's central and eastern states, as the death toll rose to 44, the National Civil Protection Directorate (CNPC) reported on Sunday.

The department's statement noted that authorities are prioritizing 139 municipalities in the states of Veracruz, central Puebla, Hidalgo, and Queretaro, as well as northern and central San Luis Potosi, to restore basic services and provide assistance to affected residents.

State authorities reported 44 deaths, of which 18 occurred in Veracruz, 16 in Hidalgo, 9 in Puebla and one in Queretaro, CNPC said.

On Sunday, authorities stepped up cleaning and sanitization efforts in the worst-hit areas to speed up aid efforts, the census of victims, and the delivery of relief supplies.

Tropical Storm Raymond recently made landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast, bringing heavy rainfall to the region.
