BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — Women truly hold up "half the sky" in China's economic and social development, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday at the opening ceremony of the Global Women's Summit.

According to Xi Jinping, women in China now make up more than 40 percent of the total employed population, more than 50 percent of all entrepreneurs in the internet industry, and more than 60 percent of medal winners at the last four Summer Olympics.

Xi Jinping noted that in the new era, Chinese women are participating in the entire process of state and social governance with unprecedented confidence and vitality.

"In China's new modernization campaign, every woman is a leading heroine," Xi Jinping said. -0-
