QINGDAO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) — The 48th People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA) flotilla departed from a military port in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, on Saturday for the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to escort civilian vessels, replacing the 47th PLA Navy flotilla.
The People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLA) 48th Fleet included the guided-missile destroyer Tangshan, the guided-missile frigate Daqing, and the comprehensive supply ship Taihu. They carried two deck-based helicopters and dozens of special forces personnel.
In preparation for the mission, the convoy flotilla conducted targeted training in scenarios such as weapons practice, escort operations, and mission resupply.
China began sending naval ships to conduct shipping protection operations in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia in December 2008. -0-
