Yerevan, October 11 (Xinhua) — High levels of air pollution were recorded in central Yerevan on Saturday morning, caused by heavy smoke from a fire at a suburban garbage dump. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced this, urging residents with respiratory illnesses to limit their time outdoors and refrain from outdoor exercise.

According to the mayor, by 11:00 a.m. local time, special sensors in the city center recorded high levels of air pollution. However, it was noted that air pollution in other areas of the capital was less severe. According to official data, by evening, air quality had returned to normal levels.

The Armenian Ministry of Health has urged Yerevan residents to limit their time outdoors if possible or to wear protective masks when leaving home.

Earlier, the mayor of Yerevan stated that the garbage dump caught fire as a result of deliberate arson. A criminal case has been opened in connection with this.
