Beijing, October 10 (Xinhua) — China's retaliatory measures against the US levying additional port charges on Chinese vessels are a "legitimate defense" aimed at maintaining fair competition in international shipping and shipbuilding markets, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Friday.
“This move by the United States is a typical act of unilateralism of a clearly discriminatory nature, which seriously harms the interests of Chinese companies,” the department’s representative noted in an online statement.
According to him, in order to protect the interests of domestic industry, Chinese authorities will, in accordance with the provisions of the PRC on international maritime transport, levy a special port fee on vessels associated with the United States, including ships flying the US flag, built in this country, and owned or operated by American companies and organizations with their shareholding.
The official representative clarified that these countermeasures will take effect simultaneously with the US imposition of additional port charges on Chinese vessels on October 14. He added that China calls on the US side to correct its missteps and move in the same direction with China to find a solution through equal consultation and cooperation.
