Washington, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump proposed Thursday expelling Spain from NATO for refusing to increase defense spending.
"They have no reason not to do it," Trump told reporters at the White House during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. "Perhaps we should simply expel them from NATO," he added.
"You're going to have to start talking to Spain. You have to call them and find out why they're slacking off," the American leader said.
Under pressure from Donald Trump, NATO members agreed in June to increase their military spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035. However, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rejected this goal, calling it incompatible with the welfare state and Spain's vision of the world. –0–
