BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) — Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), on Wednesday called on member countries of the Group of Friends of Neutrality to jointly restore multilateralism and reform and improve global governance.

Zhao Leji made the statement via video link at the invitation of the Speaker of the Mejlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan, Dunyagozel Gulmanova, at the 2nd meeting of the heads of parliaments of the member countries of the Group of Friends of Neutrality.

As the Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee noted, since its establishment more than five years ago, the Group of Friends of Neutrality has provided a useful platform for like-minded countries to strengthen mutual understanding and trust, deepen exchanges and cooperation, and pursue multilateralism.

Zhao Leji recalled that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the UN. Currently, the world is entering a new, turbulent period of fundamental change, when the UN and multilateralism are facing headwinds, he stated.

Zhao Leji pointed out that in early September, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, which emphasizes the principles of sovereign equality, the rule of international law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and real action.

According to the Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, this initiative, aimed at promoting the construction of a more equitable and reasonable global governance system, is another significant and widely welcomed initiative following the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative.

As Zhao Leji noted, the meeting of parliamentary leaders held on Wednesday focused on the role of inter-parliamentary dialogue in maintaining peace and trust throughout the world and has far-reaching significance.

Legislative bodies have a responsibility to actively promote fair and reasonable global governance and build a community of shared destiny for humanity, he emphasized.

The NPC Standing Committee chairman called on all parties to jointly implement the four global initiatives, strengthen unity and cooperation, revive multilateralism, reform and improve global governance, and jointly uphold the international system with the UN at its core and the international order based on international law.

Noting that China and Turkmenistan are good friends and partners who can rely on each other, Zhao Leji stated that during the recent visit of Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to China, the two heads of state conducted friendly exchanges and charted a new course for the development of bilateral relations.

"China is ready to work with Turkmenistan to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, deepen comprehensive mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote the construction of a Chinese-Turkmen community with a shared future," Zhao Leji said.

The Group of Friends of Neutrality was established in August 2020 at the initiative of Turkmenistan. China is one of the 18 founding members of this organization.
