Bogota, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) — Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday called for unity among Latin American countries in response to the US missile strikes on ships in the Caribbean.

He accused White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller of orchestrating the missile strikes based on a "false claim" that Colombia's counter-narcotics strategy had failed.

"They disqualified us to hide Colombia's success in drug seizures and to legitimize crime and random bombings," G. Petro wrote on social media.

"We've proven otherwise," he said, noting that Colombia will become the world's largest drug seizure country this year. Annual seizures are expected to reach 1,000 tons.

The Colombian leader said the US "armed aggression" appeared to indicate an intention to justify future invasions of Caribbean countries, calling it an irrational response to the drug problem.

"The Caribbean is a sea of freedom," G. Petro noted. "The time has come to unite the entire Caribbean. It cannot be destroyed by lies."

Since September, the US military has carried out four missile strikes in what it calls international waters in the Caribbean Sea, killing 21 suspected "narcoterrorists," according to US authorities.
