LISBON, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — More than 3,000 people gathered in central Lisbon on Saturday to express solidarity with the Palestinians and demand the release of three Portuguese citizens detained by Israel after attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Police reported that the turnout significantly exceeded organizers' expectations. While approximately 500 people were expected to attend, the event ultimately reached approximately 3,000.
Among them were the former leader of the Left Bloc, Francisco Lousão, and the presidential candidate from the Portuguese Communist Party, António Filipe.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, F. Lousan said that the movement for Palestinian rights has gained “enormous momentum throughout the world” and stressed that “it is impossible to stop this movement against the Israeli government, as evidenced by the demonstrations across Europe.”
Palestinian activist Serena Sabat, speaking to the crowd, drew attention to what she called ongoing attacks against Palestinian civilians. She called on the international community to prevent such situations from continuing.
Among the detained Portuguese citizens are Mariana Mortágua, actress Sofia Aparicio, and activist Miguel Duarte. They were aboard vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla intercepted by the Israeli Navy while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Portuguese authorities confirmed that the detained citizens are receiving consular support through their embassy in Tel Aviv. –0–
