Tbilisi, October 4 (Xinhua) — Mass riots broke out near the presidential residence in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Saturday, forcing police to use special means to restore public order.

According to reports from the scene, a group of protesters breached the presidential residence. Several dozen people broke down the fence and attacked security guards.

In response, law enforcement officers used water cannons and tear gas.

Before the dispersal began, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs issued a statement emphasizing that the protest “went beyond the law” and warning of its readiness to “take appropriate measures” to ensure public safety.

The unrest was the culmination of a protest that took place in parallel with today's municipal elections. –0–
