Tbilisi, October 4 (Xinhua) — Local government elections are taking place in Georgia on Saturday. The vote will elect 2,058 members of 64 municipal assemblies (sakrebulos), as well as 64 city and district mayors.
Nine candidates are vying for the post of mayor of the country's capital, Tbilisi, including incumbent mayor Kakha Kaladze, who represents the ruling Georgian Dream party.
As reported at a briefing by Natia Ioseliani, representative of the Central Election Commission (CEC), as of 15:00 local time, voter turnout was 28.22%.
N. Ioseliani stated that the voting is generally proceeding in a calm and professional atmosphere. She added that there have been isolated incidents that will not affect the election process.
Voting began at 8:00 AM and will close at 8:00 PM local time. A total of 3,061 polling stations are open across the country. Twelve political parties are participating in the elections.
Representatives of 28 international and 27 local organizations were involved in the election observation process.
As CEC Chairman Giorgi Kalandarishvili previously noted, preliminary election results will be announced within a few hours after the polling stations close. –0–
