UN, October 4 /Xinhua/ — Given that today's world is suffering from rampant unilateralism, the international community must remain prudent, strengthen unity and cooperation, and resolutely suppress such illegal actions, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, said on Friday.

“History has proven that unilateral coercive measures are one of the culprits of international turbulence and chaos in the world order,” he said, addressing the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in a joint statement on behalf of an interregional group of 28 UN member states.

Noting that developing countries and their populations continue to fall victim to such measures, the Permanent Representative stated that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the importance of all countries equally benefiting from development dividends. This document urges states to refrain from introducing and applying any unilateral economic, financial, or trade measures that are inconsistent with international law and the UN Charter, the diplomat emphasized.

According to Fu Cong, unilateral coercive measures, combined with secondary sanctions and excessive compliance, exacerbate existing humanitarian and economic problems and have a serious negative impact on the stability of global production and supply chains, as well as food, energy and financial security.

Moreover, they seriously undermine the global economic order and efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Permanent Representative said. Furthermore, these measures seriously violate fundamental human rights, including the rights to life, health, development, and education, and create obstacles to the enjoyment of these rights in the sanctioned countries, he added.

The diplomat once again spoke out against unilateral measures and called on some Western countries to fulfill their obligations to comply with the UN Charter and international law, and to immediately, unconditionally and completely lift all unilateral coercive measures.

Fu Cong also called on UN member states, the UN itself and other international organizations to jointly combat such illegal practices and help sanctioned countries ease their plight. –0–
