Tokyo, October 4 (Xinhua) — The first round of voting in the election for the new president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has produced no winner. Two of the five candidates, former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi and Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, will continue to the runoff.

The winner of the party vote will replace Shigeru Ishiba, who announced his resignation last month. The new chairman will almost certainly become the country's next prime minister, as the LDP remains the largest party in the Diet.

In the first round of voting, LDP lawmakers cast 295 votes, with another 295 votes distributed among rank-and-file party members. Sanae Takaichi, who led with 183 votes, advanced to the second round alongside Shinjiro Koizumi, who received 164 votes.

In the second round of voting, LDP legislators will cast the same number of votes as in the first, but the number of votes from rank-and-file members will be reduced to one for each of the party's 47 prefectural branches. –0–
