BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) — China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Saturday issued an orange alert, the second-highest in its four-level system, for Typhoon Matmo, the 21st typhoon this year, which is strengthening and heading toward the country's southern coast.
According to the National Meteorological Center, the typhoon, which was observed at 18 degrees north latitude and 117.7 degrees east longitude at 5 a.m. on Saturday, is moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 25-30 km per hour.
Matmo is expected to make landfall Sunday afternoon along coastal areas from Dianbai County, Guangdong Province, to Wanning City, Hainan Province, in southern China, according to the National Meteorological Center.
According to the agency's forecast, the typhoon will bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to southern coastal regions of China from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.
The NMC called on local authorities to prepare for an emergency response to the typhoon and remain on high alert for possible mountain torrents and geological disasters caused by heavy rainfall.
As a reminder, China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow, and blue. -0-
