HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province on Friday activated a Level 4 typhoon alert as Typhoon Matmo, the 21st to hit the island in 2025, approaches.

According to the provincial meteorological service, the typhoon will enter the eastern South China Sea (SCS) on Friday afternoon or evening, making landfall in the city of Wenchang or passing near the coast on Sunday afternoon. Wind speeds are expected to range from 42 to 48 meters per second, ranking it as a strong typhoon.

As Matmo is forecast to impact Hainan Island from Saturday evening to Sunday, which is peak travel time during China's eight-day National Day holiday and the traditional Zhongqiu (Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival), relevant authorities have called for enhanced security measures at coastal, water, and mountain tourist sites across the island.

Major flight routes, ferry service across the Qiongzhou Strait, and high-speed rail operations are likely to be impacted by the typhoon from Saturday evening into Sunday. However, normal service is expected to resume by Monday morning.
