Tbilisi, October 2 (Xinhua) — Georgian Railways is launching a new block train route, Batumi-Poti-Tbilisi-Absheron-Sumgait-Alat, which will connect Black Sea ports with Azerbaijan's largest cargo terminals. This was announced on Thursday by Georgian Railways (GR).
Representatives of the Georgian and Azerbaijani railway authorities signed an agreement to launch the new service in Almaty. The parties agreed to provide cargo owners with a simplified logistics service based on the "terminal-to-door" principle.
Block trains will operate according to a pre-arranged schedule, ensuring the timely delivery of containers. The new service is expected to significantly reduce road congestion and reduce the negative environmental impact by shifting container shipments from road to rail.
"This is a simplified logistics service for cargo owners, who will receive containers from Batumi, Poti, and Tbilisi to Baku and vice versa at precisely agreed-upon times, without delays. Thanks to this service, cargo owners will save not only time but also money, as storing cargo and empty containers at terminals entails a daily fee," noted Lasha Abashidze, General Director of Georgian Railways.
