Oslo, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — European leaders gathered in the Danish capital of Copenhagen on Thursday for the 7th European Political Community (EPC) summit, where the prospects for future relations between Ukraine and the European Union were a key issue on the agenda.

Speaking at the summit on behalf of the host country, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted security challenges in Europe, noting that the continent must become strong enough to make war "unthinkable."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that his country is ready to open the first phase of EU accession negotiations. He said such progress would strengthen Europe's overall security.

Nevertheless, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán once again spoke out against Ukraine joining the European Union. He told reporters that full membership was unacceptable. "Membership would bring war to the EU, and EU money would flow to Ukraine. This is too much," he said, adding that a strategic partnership on economic, energy, and security issues would be acceptable.

Even before Denmark assumed the EU Presidency on July 1, Copenhagen signaled its intention to expedite Ukraine's accession negotiations, including opening negotiating clusters. However, Hungary's objections cast doubt on the possibility of achieving significant progress during the Danish Presidency.

The ENP summit in Copenhagen brought together approximately 50 leaders from EU and non-EU countries. Discussions focused on European security and hybrid threats.

Established in 2022, the ENP serves as a platform for informal political and strategic dialogue to promote security, stability and prosperity across the European continent. –0–
