NICOSIA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — A military parade was held in the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, on Wednesday to mark the 65th anniversary of the country's independence.

In a televised address, President Nikos Christodoulides called for continued efforts to resolve the differences caused by the 1974 conflict. He described reunification as possible and reaffirmed Cyprus's commitment to the rights and equality of all its residents.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when Turkish military intervention followed a coup by Greek officers. Since then, the island has remained divided, with Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots living separately.

Cyprus became independent on August 16, 1960. Since 1979, Independence Day has been officially celebrated on October 1. –0–
