Vienna, October 2 (Xinhua) — Power outages occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) in Ukraine on Wednesday morning due to a technical malfunction, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on social media.

The plant lost connection to the 330 kW transmission line from its substation in Slavutych. Thanks to a rapid switchover to backup lines, power was restored, with the exception of the New Safe Confinement (NSC).

According to the IAEA, the NSC is currently powered by two emergency diesel generators. The NSC is enclosed by the old sarcophagus built after the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

On April 26, 1986, one of the worst nuclear accidents in history occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A series of explosions rocked Unit 4, causing radiation to spread across Ukraine and other European countries.
