WASHINGTON, October 1 (Xinhua) — The U.S. federal government announced a government shutdown early Wednesday after partisan disagreements prevented Congress from passing a funding bill. This is the first government shutdown in nearly seven years.
Hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be forced to take unpaid leave, which could disrupt or delay some government services and impact the release of economic data.
The shutdown began hours after the US Senate failed to pass a short-term spending bill that would have temporarily kept the government running. The resolution, proposed by Senate Republicans, was blocked by Democrats, failing to secure the 60 votes needed for passage.
