CHANGCHUN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — China opened a new high-speed railway on Sunday that will significantly cut travel time from Beijing to the famous Changbai Mountain in northeast China's Jilin Province, boosting winter sports and ice and snow tourism in the country.

This line connects Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, with Changbaishan Station in Antu County, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province. Trains are designed to travel at 350 km/h. It will reduce travel time from Beijing to the Changbaishan mountain region, a popular winter tourism destination with several world-class ski resorts, to 4 hours and 33 minutes, saving approximately one and a half hours.

For passenger convenience, the distance between seats on trains running along this line has been increased by 5 cm to facilitate boarding and disembarking passengers carrying ski equipment. The intelligent temperature control system has been improved to reduce discomfort from indoor and outdoor temperature fluctuations in winter and spring. Stations along the route are equipped with one-stop tourist service counters offering services such as ticket booking for the Changbai Mountain Scenic Area and self-drive travel itineraries along the G331 National Highway.

Since the aforementioned railway route passes through the Changbai Mountains, 77 percent of the route is laid on bridges or through tunnels. Builders overcame the challenges of extremely low temperatures and complex geological conditions by using domestic equipment and frost-resistant materials. During construction, they also prioritized the protection of key wildlife habitats, such as the Manchurian tiger and Chinese yew. Jilin Province, located between 40 and 50 degrees north latitude, is considered one of China's premier ice and snow tourism destinations. Its snow and ice infrastructure is suitable for skiers of all skill levels. From November 2024 to March 2025, it welcomed 170 million tourists from various parts of China, a 35 percent increase year-on-year. -0-
