SANYA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Sanya City in southern China's Hainan Island Province is on high alert as Typhoon Bualu, the 20th typhoon of the year, approaches.

Earlier, at 9:00 pm on Saturday, Sanya city authorities activated a Level 2 flood and typhoon emergency response mode.

Typhoon Bualoi was raging in the South China Sea at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, 205 kilometers south of Sanya. Maximum winds near its epicenter reached 32.7 m/s, the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Service reported.

According to the Sanya Municipal Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief Committee, all aircraft arrivals and departures were suspended at Sanya Fenghuang International Airport from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.

As of 1:00 a.m. Sunday, a total of 36,842 people had been evacuated in the city. Kindergartens and schools were temporarily closed in several cities and counties in Hainan Province.

Currently, more than 6,600 rescuers and two rescue ships have been mobilized in Sanya.

Forecasters predict Typhoon Bualoi will move northwest at speeds of 25 to 30 km/h. It is expected to pass near the southern coast of Hainan Island on Sunday afternoon and reach coastal areas of north-central Vietnam by evening.

Due to the typhoon, rainfall exceeded 50 mm in 125 townships and villages, 17 cities and counties in Hainan Province. Of these, 27 townships, villages, or districts in seven cities and counties, including Sanya, Wenchang, and Lingshui, recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm, with the maximum rainfall of 189.8 mm recorded in Zhongping Township, Qiongzhong County. Furthermore, gusty winds, reaching 24.5 m/s, were observed in most coastal areas of Hainan Island.
