GUIYANG, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — The world's highest bridge in southwest China's Guizhou Province opened to traffic on Sunday morning, cutting travel time across a gorge from two hours to just two minutes after three years of construction.
The Huajiang Gorge Bridge, rising 625 meters above the Beipan River in the Guizhou mountain region, is nearly nine times taller than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.
The bridge, with a main span of 1,420 meters, also became the world's longest-span steel truss suspension bridge built in a mountainous area, provincial authorities said.
The 2,890-metre-long structure, which spans the Huajiang Gorge, known as the "crack in the earth", is the latest link in the rapidly expanding infrastructure network of the world's second-largest economy.
The Beipan River Bridge, previously considered the highest in the world, is located just over 100 km from the Huajiang Gorge Bridge. The previous record-holder, which opened to traffic in 2016, had a vertical clearance of 565.4 meters between the bridge deck and the river surface.
Over the years, more than 30,000 bridges have been built in the mountainous region of Guizhou, one of China's least developed provinces, three of which are the tallest in the world. About half of the top 100 tallest bridges in the world are located in this Chinese province.
