New Delhi, September 27 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a stampede at a rally in southern India on Saturday has risen to 38, with most of the victims being women and children, media reported.

The tragedy occurred in the state of Tamil Nadu during a rally organised by film actor Vijay in support of his political organisation, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Senior political leader of the state's ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, V. Senthil Balaji, said 46 of the injured were admitted to a private hospital, while 12 others were undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the deaths in a post on social media platform X, calling the incident "deeply sad."

"My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. I wish them strength during this difficult time. I pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured," N. Modi wrote.
